Hooks Island
Hooks Island

Created by Jacob Gotts (talk). Self-nominated at 06:24, 21 September 2020 (UTC).[reply]

  • Date and length are good. QPQ is not applicable as this is the first DYK nomination (welcome!) The image is properly licensed to the public domain, used in the article with alt text, and is perfectly suitable here at DYK, but it should be exported to Wikimedia Commons for non-English usage by hitting the tab that says "export to wikimedia commons". I would change the caption here to simply "Hooks Island". Neutrality is good. Earwig's copyvio detector shows no problem. Each paragraph must have a citation, so please put one into the paragraph ending with "beneath the mud." The article must be changed from stub to start classification on the talk page. Both hooks are good, supported by refs. I like the first hook for its greater mystery. Binksternet (talk) 15:59, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi, I came by to promote this, but I don't see the ALT0 hook fact in the source given. The source says that it is prohibited to enter the marshes, and boaters are not allowed to land without authorization, but where does it say people are not allowed to go to the island? Yoninah (talk) 21:54, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
My thought was that if it's an island, and boats are not allowed to land, then the intention is clear that the general public is not allowed on the island. Binksternet (talk) 22:00, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • But if the source says boaters are not allowed to land without authorization, the implication is that it is possible for boaters to get authorization to land and it does happen, which contradicts ALT0: "nobody" is an absolute, while "without authorization" is far from it. Sounds fine to me. The original quote from the site description is this:
"Boat users need to be sensitive to wildlife, high tide refugia, and marsh habitat, observe buffer distances, and not land in any location besides the Sailing Station, including Hooks Island, located across from the Sailing Station. Additionally, there are areas located nearby where a boater who lands inappropriately could disturb nesting Western burrowing owls (Mountain View) or Western snowy plovers (Alviso or Ravenswood). The City of Palo Alto Municipal Code prohibits trampling vegetation and/or harassing wildlife and non‐permitted activities in the marsh constitute violations and are subject to fines of $1,000 or more. Nearby lands owned by the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge also prohibit unauthorized entry into marshes. Rangers have not had problems with boaters landing in the marshes, with the exception of emergencies where someone had to make an unauthorized landing. Most of the problems within the Preserve with people entering the marsh have been photographers who enter from the road. "
So it could be changed to "boaters are not", or "unauthorized persons are not", etc (the island is part of the marshlands). Obviously there are exceptions (like park rangers, ecologists with permits, utility maintenance personnel since there are transmission towers on the island), so that seems like it'd be clearer. {} 22:18, 24 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Towers but no people ?

[edit]

It's not clear how the island can be home to five transmission towers when humans are not allowed on the island.

How were the towers built there and how are they maintained ?

Just curious. 2600:8800:785:8500:C23F:D5FF:FEC4:D51D (talk) 02:05, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Looks a bit odd with those three massive images in the lead.
  • Green checkmarkY Resized them, added a gallery caption, and moved down to the new "Geography" section where I think it fits better anyway. jp×g 18:18, 14 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Where is the island in each of those images?
  • Green checkmarkY I've made a gallery caption that says it's in the center of the images. If there's a way to superimpose text on the images in the gallery, that might be even better (I'm sure there's a template for it). jp×g 18:18, 14 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Actually, it still looks kind of weird. Not quite sure how to fix it (the caption is centered with regard to the full pagewidth, not the individual images?) jp×g 00:49, 15 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • "the San Francisco Bay" is "the" really needed?
  • "in the city of" just "in" is fine.
  • " San Francisco Bay area" our article appears to capitalise Area.
  • As a parenthetical note, I'm not quite sure which capitalization is "canonical". I see it both ways; I think the only time "area" is always capitalized is if you're just saying "the Bay Area" (without qualifying it with anything). But this isn't really that big of a deal (and certainly doesn't matter here). jp×g 03:19, 15 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • What is USGS?
  • Image captions are all fragments so no full stops.
  • There should be no material which is exclusively in the lead.
  • Is there any history for this island?
  • Red X symbolN I could not find diddly-squat; the closest I could get in any source was that it appeared on USGS topo maps (i.e. became separated from the larger land mass) some time between 1899 and 1941. jp×g 01:07, 15 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • "As is common on large areas of ground, grass grows on Hooks Island" unnecessary.
  • "which "grows denser than the" you should be able to paraphrase this basically factual quote.
  • "The S. alterniflora, originally" why The?
  • Blue question mark? Specifically, the S. alterniflora referred to in this sentence (the grass that was introduced there in 1973) hybridized with native cord grasses. I guess it's mostly arbitrary and I could rephrase it to avoid this if you want. jp×g 01:06, 15 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • "aboveground" this is typically two words.
  • "surface dwellers and animals" what are "surface dwellers"? Are they not animals?
  • Blue question mark? "Surface dwellers" and "animals that lived beneath the mud" as two separate categories, but will edit.
  • "70,000-acre "work area",..." etc. convert.
  • "was a "resounding success"," according to whom?
  • "species.[9][8]" order.
  • " near-threatened[10] California clapper rail." overlinked clapper, put ref at end of seentence.
  • "Island and killing them" -> killing the clapper rails.
  • "the San Francisco Bay area" Area.
  • "The clapper rail majestic." majestic? And no period required.
  • No need to force ref width, just {{reflist}} is fine.

That's all on a quick pass, so on hold for now. The Rambling Man (Stay alert! Control the virus! Save lives!!!!) 17:27, 5 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@The Rambling Man: Thanks for the review. I will be getting to this shortly. jp×g 02:57, 7 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
