Help and priority

I just started this long-overdue article, but would appreciate help. In terms of "Priority", Representation theory is "Top", so this could be "Mid" or "High". Geometry guy 01:50, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hamilton

The notion of representing complex numbers as ordered pairs of real numbers was presented in 1834 by W. R. Hamilton. His equation (c) implies (0,1)x(0,1)=(–1,0) to represent the imaginary unit. See his On conjugate functions or algebraic couples. Hamilton stimulated representation theory by introducing quaternions in 1843, which were eventually represented with 2x2 complex matrices (when?). Following Hamilton, James Cockle introduced tessarines and coquaternions, also later represented by systems of square matrices. Thus, representation theory is more than just group representation.
