Contested deletion

[edit]

This article should not be speedy deleted as having no substantive content, because... it certainly DOES and will have MORE and if not already added, and does serve a GOOD purpose!

The current article for Telus Communications Inc. contains too much material that is not relevant to the telephone company (ie: Telus Health, Babylon Diagnostic, Telus International, ADT Security, etc.). It would be far more appropriate to have all that content removed and included into this new article which is about the parent company.

It is unfortunate that you were not able to see that before placing the speedy deletion notice. -- WILDSTARtalk 02:42, 22 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Timeline

[edit]

Almost the entire article consists of a timeline so I moved the article to reflect that. The corporation merits its own article such as Power Corporation of Canada, Bombardier Inc., or Rogers Communications. The article Telus Communications (conglomerate) could include sections for example "Overview", "Background", "Assets under management", "Subsidiaries and Associate companies", "Acquisitions and Mergers", "Management" with a subsection for "Board of Directors".Oceanflynn (talk) 18:32, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Suggested move

[edit]

The current title ("A timeline of the history of Telus Corporation") is rather clunky, and somewhat redundant. You won't find another article on Wikipedia that starts with "A timeline of the history....". Therefore, I recommend that the article be moved to the simpler History of Telus Corporation. PKT(alk) 12:45, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

PKT, Actually, other "clunky" titles like here and here have been created, to go back just a few. The entire contents of this article was taken from the original article Telus Corporation which has been substantially trimmed and received the honour of yet another "clunky" title Telus Corporation (conglomerate). There was no need to do any of this, since the main article Telus exists, and the Telus Corporation article was simply for the holding company where all this content belongs. I would not put any effort into changing titles, since I am challenging what has mistakenly been done here, and ALL without first seeking consensus. -- WILDSTARtalk 15:01, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Unless there are issues or objections, the plan is to restore the article Telus Corporation, by moving this article and the contents of Telus Corporation (conglomerate) into it. The article should not have been moved to A timeline of the history of Telus Corporation without first consulting with the community or the editor that recently created the article. -- WILDSTARtalk 16:13, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
PKT WildStar I have no objection to moving the article to the simpler History of Telus Corporation.Oceanflynn (talk) 17:51, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I will work on other articles not related to Telus until this is resolved.Oceanflynn (talk) 17:53, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have no objection to moving Telus Corporation (conglomerate) and its content to Telus Corporation.Oceanflynn (talk) 19:18, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oceanflynn, another bold alternative might be to create a new Telus Communications article, move just the contents about the phone company from Telus into it, then move Telus Corporation (conglomerate) to Telus which would become the anchor article. All Telus articles would include a hatnote and a See also to History of Telus instead of History of Telus Corporation. Since the history of Telus goes further back than the history of Telus Corporation, History of Telus could be expanded further. Let me know if you like the idea, and I'll place an invite on the Telus Talk page to come here to discuss further and maybe seek concensus. -- WILDSTARtalk 07:04, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like a good solution WildStar I think you should be bold and go ahead with this. This would resolve the parent/subsidiary issue and the resulting duplication of articles.Oceanflynn (talk) 15:15, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Per my comments in the related, parallel discussion on moving the Telus Corporation (conglomerate) redirect to Telus Corporation over the redirect, dropping the unnecessary parenthetical disambiguation qualifier, I personally have no strong opinion or opposition to that move, but I would strongly oppose moving Telus Corporation to Telus. Unquestionably, Telus is the common name for one of Canada's largest publicly-traded telecommunications companies. Indeed, the article, created by Nate Silva in 2002, has had the stock ticker symbols listed in its infobox for years, and the article has been about both the publicly-traded parent company and its principal operating business, Telus Communications, Inc. When people associate the name Telus, they are commonly referring to either (a) telecommunications company or (b) the mobility division. We even have a Wikidata entry for Telus, as the publicly-traded telecommunications/holding company, which is used by multiple language Wikipedias (including Simple English Wikipedia, among others) on which it has been translated. I do agree that the lede for Telus needs to be rewritten to reference both Telus Corporation and Telus Communications, Inc., and the article does likely need to be reorganized and updated to reflect more contemporary events. We should also be having a substantive merger discussion on what and how to merge back into Telus because, it seems to me, for such a major telecommunications company in Canada, we should not be having 4-5 stub- and C-class articles. Dmehus (talk) 18:12, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Again, there is no parallel discussion, nor has there ever been one, to move Telus Corporation to Telus. -- WILDSTARtalk 18:36, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure where I saw it now, but I'm certain I recall someone (can't remember who) suggest moving Telus to Telus Communications and Telus Corporation to Telus. If I misunderstood, I'll withdraw my contested deletion. That's all I'm objecting to. Dmehus (talk) 19:13, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Should Telus pages be reorganized?

Background

[edit]

On March 21, 2020 a new article on the English Wikipedia was created for the holding company Telus Corporation. The last revision of it is here. It included the usual Wikipedia article structure for a corporation; an infobox, lead, timeline, financial statements, governance, and references. On June 10, 2020 the timeline section was removed from the article and copied into a new article called A timeline of the history of Telus Corporation and slightly expanded, and what remained in the Telus Corporation article was moved to Telus Corporation (conglomerate). Telus Corporation was gone! Although there was sufficient cause to have it all rolled back, the deed is done, and perhaps it might be best to move forward and come up with something better.

Status Summary

[edit]
* Move Telus to Telus Communications.  Not done (although a suggestion from another user, not climbing that hill)
* Create Telus as a disambiguation page for all the Telus articles.  Not done (same as above)
* Move Telus Corporation (conglomerate) to Telus Corporation.  Done
* Move A timeline of the history of Telus Corporation to History of Telus.  Done
Thank you WildStar and Svgalbertian for doing this!Oceanflynn (talk) 21:31, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, this where I saw it, WildStar. Bullet point # 1 to move to Telus to Telus Communications. That's what I am objecting to. If you can confirm that's off the table, I'll withdraw my contested deletion discussion at Talk:Telus Corporation. Dmehus (talk) 19:15, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Dmehus You're actually changing what you said and muddying the waters. Moving Telus to Telus Communications, is certainly a conversation that can be had, but its certainly not a valid reason to contest removing the redirect so that Telus Corporation (conglomerate) could have been easily moved to Telus Corporation. -- WILDSTARtalk 20:06, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, fair enough, but I would just note that, unquestionably, Telus is the primary topic for the telecommunications company—that is, people associate Telus with the telecommunications company, not the various subsidiaries so a disambiguation page for Telus would be inappropriate here. I do feel, rather strongly, that we should be merging and Telus Corporation (conglomerate) back into Telus due to the significant overlap—it simply requires a rewriting of the lede in Telus and to reorganizing Telus. Nevertheless, I won't object to the speedy deletion of Telus Corporation to allow Telus Corporation (conglomerate) to move back there, even though I do still feel there is significant overlap.
