Conflict of interest

[edit]

At least one major contributor to this article appears to have a close personal or professional connection to the topic, and thus to have a conflict of interest. Conflict-of-interest editors are strongly discouraged from editing the article directly, but are always welcome to propose changes on the talk page (i.e., here). You can attract the attention of other editors by putting {{request edit}} (exactly so, with the curly parentheses) at the beginning of your request, or by clicking the link on the lowest yellow notice above. Requests that are not supported by independent reliable sources are unlikely to be accepted.

Please also note that our Terms of Use state that "you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation." An editor who contributes as part of his or her paid employment is required to disclose that fact. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 14:24, 16 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Clean-up

[edit]

What a mess. I have tried to add the most obvious COI editors as connected contributors on this talk page, based mostly on whether they contributed advertorial material, unsourced primary material, or had usernames that appear to represent the gallery itself. Seems like this has been a problem page for a while. Lots of promo in the piece itself, which I've tried to clean up. It seems like there is some history here in terms of SPAs, so I may have missed some material added by COIs and some obvious SPAs for adding to the connected contributor template. Would be keen to have someone else take a look to see if we have to further address the disfiguring tags. Looks like the owners have issues too, may take a crack at that. Edit request

[edit]

Hi, my name is Maddy and I’d like to help update this article. I’ve put my ideas and suggestions into a separate draft for easier review. The draft includes the expansion of the History section, and the addition of Locations, Publishers, Education and learning and Sustainability sections, complete with sourcing. Looking forward to your thoughts! Maddy at H&W (talk) 11:12, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for all of your help @Maddy at H&W.
All: following the workshop of edits, I merged the reworked draft into the main article. Would love any changes folks suggest and especially some input from others more familiar with the manual of style too on some of these. Any questions, I'm now watching as is Maddy. Star Mississippi 13:34, 29 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Justlettersandnumbers no issue with your revert, but I think what Maddy added on the exhibits and locations is interesting historical information on the galleries and worth adding. Re: Infobox, I've seen that used for galleries as well. Is that incorrect? Or should it be used only for things with one location and company would be better? I'm sure @Maddy at H&W would love some suggestions on how to proceed. I'll undo the merge on the main page here so it can be used if helpful. Star Mississippi 20:55, 29 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Star Mississippi, it'd probably have been better manners on my part if I'd discussed this with you before reverting, my apologies. Unfortunately, as you may have seen, this page has a long history of inappropriate and promotional editing, and I believe that such a large proposed over-write of the page should first have been discussed here on talk. About the infobox, my take: the word 'gallery' has two fairly distinct meanings, the first being an art museum such as the National Gallery of Art or the National Portrait Gallery, the second being a commercial art dealership such as this one. Unless there's some consensus somewhere that I don't know about (?), those in the first group should presumably use {{infobox museum}}, those in the second {{infobox company}} like any other commercial activity. I'll try to look in here again tomorrow, regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:12, 29 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha re: infobox. I guess the commercial galleries I've seen using it came from the fuzzier world as exists in some areas where commercial dealerships also have exhibits ala museums, but I can see company too. I'll be honest, I usually leave infoboxes for someone else since I invariably break the formatting somehow.
Like I said, no worries on the revert. All part of the cycle here. As is, sadly, the the huge backlogs. I'm not familiar with the prior COI edits but @Maddy at H&W has been trying to get input since March including on the Museums project and through the formal edit request system, which is horrifically backlogged. I found her edits to be good and accepted, you disagree. All fine.
What are your thoughts for getting more discussion, input? I know the usual discussion about paid editing v. volunteers but in this specific case, I think Maddy is definitely working with us and following the system. I restored the user space draft where hopefully folks can weigh in. Speaking persoally to your query, I can see leaving some as H&W and others as "the gallery" but think that could get confusing since H&W the company operates gallery spaces in multiple locations, but I'm sure we can figure it out. Star Mississippi 21:35, 29 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Justlettersandnumbers, it's nice to meet you! I want to apologize for not moving the discussion at User talk:Maddy at H&W/Hauser & Wirth suggested additions to this main Talk page so other editors could follow and contribute as well. At the time, it seemed logical to discuss on the Talk page of the draft itself. I'd also like to clarify that I've never worked on this or any article prior to posting my declared request here, and that I've made sure to follow all of the COI guidelines to the best of my understanding. Star Mississippi, thanks again for collaborating on this and for your help with the article. I'm sure we can all reach a consensus that benefits the encyclopedia, please let me know if either of you have any questions or if I can help in some way. Maddy at H&W (talk) 09:34, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Maddy at H&W. Responding to your Talk page note here so @Justlettersandnumbers can see it and raise any questions they have. You've posted in WP:Museums, and I'm not aware of any other active options to get input. Star Mississippi 13:03, 19 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Maddy at H&W, Star Mississippi, I'm not sure if this helps, but here are two possible ways forward:

  • if there are fundamental errors or omissions of basic fact in the page (as has been suggested here), Maddy could submit edit requests to correct them
  • if what she wants to do is to overwrite the existing text (at least part of which was written by me, by the way) with a different one, then perhaps a request for comment would be the way to go – I don't see enough (well, any) discussion on this page to suggest that consensus might be reached just by asking for it.

I'm going to be mostly or completely away from this project for ten days or more, and am unlikely to contribute further here during that time. One quick question: what does User:Margxx/HB Antwerp Draft, which as far as I can see neither of you has edited, have to do with this? Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 22:36, 19 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Justlettersandnumbers, thanks for this! First thing, regarding the draft, I've actually never seen that before... An advisor is helping me with the coding for these responses, and she appears to have made a mistake. I meant to link to this draft- which is where Star Mississippi and I have been discussing this rather large edit. I agree that there does not appear to be enough discussion on this Talk page at the moment, which is why I asked for help with next steps in gaining additional insight and, hopefully, eventual consensus. Would also love specific feedback from you on the suggested text (and greatly appreciate your previous work on this, thank you!) though you've said you'll be away for a while now... Looking forward to your thoughts. Maddy at H&W (talk) 16:43, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Suggested edit breakdown

[edit]

Justlettersandnumbers and Star Mississippi, thank you both for your time on this. Would it make sense to reopen the edit request?

Following the above advice, here is a detailed breakdown of the suggested expansion of the existing article in an effort to update the content and provide additional information about the gallery's work. As stated earlier on in this discussion, I'm very happy to receive feedback and work with the community to shape the draft/article into something that would be appropriate and benefit the encyclopedia. I've already begun this process with Star Mississippi and have made changes accordingly.

My proposed rewrite currently includes a new breakdown and expansion of the article into the following sections:

  • History (Brief overview of founding and management, notable artists and estates)
  • Locations and exhibitions and subsections (List of spaces, expansion over time since 1992)
  • Publishers (H&W's publishing activities since 1992)
  • Partnerships and learning (Noteworthy educational partnerships and programs)
  • Sustainability (Overview of H&W's activity and partnerships in sustainability in recent years)

I believe I was careful to only include notable information and legitimate, third-party sources to support it, but am more than happy to discuss anything that might be seen as promotional. For reference, the complete draft and discussion can be seen here- User:Maddy at H&W/Hauser & Wirth suggested additions. Let's try to keep all feedback on this Talk page, so that all interested parties are privy to the discussion. Looking forward to working on this further, Maddy at H&W (talk) 10:59, 26 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have been asked for my advice by Maddy - the mere request affects my answer. My drive-by view is based on 1) COI is meant to stop gross misuses of our project by unscrupulous or negligent editors. Maddy does not appear to fit my identikit of this type of editor 2) A v.v.quick scan read of the article would normally throw up the thought, "this is written by the marketing manager" when it is full of peacock and pretense. It didn't 3) I don't like long discussions on talk pages where we stop useful editors from helping the project while we explain the niceties or not of the Oxford Comma/ dusty guidelines 4) I get that there has been abuse in the past... but it doesnt look to me as if that is happening now. SO I think we should either let the article be openly editted on a AGF basis or lock it against new users just to protect the newish editors from someone turning up (e.g. her boss?) and ruining the trust we are offering. HTH. Victuallers (talk) 15:20, 26 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Victuallers, Star Mississippi, Justlettersandnumbers, I've opened a new request following the discussion above. Would really appreciate any assistance or input. Thanks again! Maddy at H&W (talk) 10:10, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Do it! Maddy. No one is stopping you I think and its all discussed here and no one has commented. Victuallers (talk) 10:49, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Victuallers, thanks so much for your assistance here. I've implemented the changes. Maddy at H&W (talk) 09:58, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies, I was offline for a week or so. I never had an issue with the original edit, and have no issue with this being fulfilled. Thanks @Victuallers for weighing in. Assume when @Justlettersandnumbers is back, they'll pop in. Summer schedules are hard. Star Mississippi 16:20, 7 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Updates

[edit]

Hi there, I'd like to propose that the following updates be made to the article (references included below):

  • Under "Partnerships and learning":
In November 2022, Iwan Wirth announced the gallery's first online auction, "Art for Better", to support the humanitarian aid programs of UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency.[1]. The gallery raised $4,585,000 (USD), with all proceeds going to support UNHCR.[2] All of the twelve offered lots were sold at the auction and were donated by gallery artists Rita Ackermann, Larry Bell, Frank Bowling, George Condo, Martin Creed, Estate Günther Förg, Rashid Johnson, Glenn Ligon, Angel Otero, Thomas J Price, Avery Singer and Anj Smith.[2]
  • Under "Location history":
In June 2022 the gallery announced the opening of a new space in Paris. Paris-based architect Luis Laplace was appointed to oversee renovations of the location, a 19th-century hôtel particulier.[3]

Pinging Star Mississippi and Victuallers in case they may be willing to take yet another look here. Thanks again for all of your help, Maddy at H&W (talk) 11:08, 10 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the ping @Maddy at H&W. I unfortunately don't have the bandwidth to look into this right now with limited on wiki time. I'm fine with it though. Also courtesy ping @Justlettersandnumbers who had some concerns last time. Star Mississippi 16:27, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Since there have been no objections, I'll update the article as suggested above. If anyone takes issue, I am here to discuss as always. Maddy at H&W (talk) 13:06, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Belatedly this looks great. I just made a few quick copyedits, but no issue with the material or writing style. Thanks, as always, @Maddy at H&W for working with us. Have a good weekend Star Mississippi 20:36, 3 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
