Flag
[edit]What is the situation with the Guadeloupe flag? It seems to be used a lot, but it isn't applied consistently. Should players, clubs, etc., who represent Guadeloupe have this local flag of Guadeloupe – – or a French flag – ? I'm not sure what the political ramifications may be of using the local flag that is commonly being applied. JohnnyPolo24 (talk) 20:18, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
It seems acceptable to apply the new Guadeloupe local flag (see GuadeloupeFlag.png) when refering to sports teams associated with Guadaloupe. This is due to the fact that if Guadeloupe were to play France or another French colony (such as Martinique) one would see two French flags, which would be visually confusing. Furthermore, one may be lead to believe that the Guadeloupe national soccer team is associated directly with France, which is incorrect because it consists of players from the island of Guadelope. Showing the Guadeloupe local flag is not a political message, but a mere confirmation that team France is not the same as team Guadeloupe. (Bennyj600 (talk) 19:44, 22 March 2009 (UTC))
Team Colours
[edit]The seems to be a difference in team colours between the English version of this page and the French version of this page. If you know which one is correct, please correct this error. (Bennyj600 (talk) 19:38, 22 March 2009 (UTC))
As shown by the Gold Cup telecasts, the French version is the correct one. Bmanphilly (talk) 12:00, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
Just updated them. Bmanphilly (talk) 13:15, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
Rename Guadeloupe Football team
[edit]The guadeloupe is not a nation and the football team is not a national football team, even though they play in some international tournaments. They call themselves "Sélection régionale de Guadeloupe". I think the page should be renamed "Guadeloupe Football team" or "Guadeloupe regional Football team". It aslso applies to French Guiana, Martinique and maybe others regional teams. Withenemies (talk) 15:33, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
- I agree. Guadeloupe is an overseas territory of France, not a nation. They play in CONCACAF fixtures, but they are not a recognised FIFA member. Therefore, I think Guadeloupe football team is the best title. – PeeJay 13:58, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
- Guadeloupe football selection is the literal translation... Not sure what FIFA recognition has to do with defining a team as national, need a better definition otherwise you are going to run into some issues down the road. User:cabazap —Preceding undated comment added 02:14, 12 June 2011 (UTC).
- I agree this page should be renamed ! Frenchl (talk) 09:36, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

- Guadeloupe national football team → Guadeloupe football team or Guadeloupe regional football team
- Martinique national football team → Martinique football team
- French Guiana national football team → French Guiana football team
- Mayotte national football team → Mayotte football team
- Réunion national football team → Réunion football team
- Saint Barthélemy national football team → Saint Barthélemy football team
- Saint Martin national football team → Saint Martin football team
- Saint Pierre and Miquelon national football team → Saint Pierre and Miquelon football team
- Brittany national football team → Brittany football team
- Corsica national football team → Corsica football team
– The five first territories are not nations but regions and departments. These teams are managed by regional leagues which are not independent bodies: all are affiliated to the French Football Federation, and players who have played for one of these teams can still play for the French team afterwards. As said earlier the official name is "Sélection de Guadeloupe". Saint Barthélemy, Saint Martin and Saint Pierre and Miquelon are not nations either but overseas collectivities of France. Brittany and Corsica are not even managed by regional leagues nor affiliated to ConIFA. Frenchl (talk) 13:36, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose What's the COMMONNAME? These are often referred to as "national teams" in English, but that may not necessarily be the common name from my search. SportingFlyer T·C 16:07, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
- What do you mean exactly ? Wikipedia must use commonly recognizable names per WP:COMMONNAME. Common name is "équipe de Guadeloupe" or "sélection de Guadeloupe". On their official website, there is no occurence of "équipe nationale de Guadeloupe", 3 occurences for "équipe de Guadeloupe", and 131 occurences for "sélection de Guadeloupe". On the whole web : 9 000 for "équipe nationale de Guadeloupe", 501 000 for "équipe de Guadeloupe", and 186 000 for "sélection de Guadeloupe". Thus, the name I am asking to opt for is 56 times more used than the current name. Frenchl (talk) 16:25, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
- And I also add to my request Brittany national football team and Corsica national football team. Calling Brittany and Corsica nations is completely stupid. I didn't expect to see this on Wikipedia one day. Ask French people if Brittany is a nation, they will take you for a fool. I'm half Breton myself and it would never cross my mind to say that Brittany is a nation and its team is a national team ! Frenchl (talk) 17:05, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
- FYI, here is a previous debate and poll about this subject. Frenchl (talk) 17:07, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
