What to do about the synopsis

[edit]

It currently covers only the first two episodes; with this much content being focused on such a comparatively small portion of the show, it definitely qualifies as fancruft. Seeing as though it doesn't even cover anything else that happens in later episodes, I'm wondering if it would be best to simply delete that section and let somebody start anew. I agree. Given the number of characters, and the intricacies of the plot, do we really need more than a brief statement along the following lines:
'The story starts with the arrival of Julio Olmedo, a young man who is investigating the disappearance of his sister Cristina, a maid at the Grand Hotel. Julio assumes a false identity as a waiter; he is aided by Alicia Alarcon (a daughter of the hotel's owner), with whom he falls in love. Their investigations gradually uncover many other mysteries, mainly revolving around the machinations of the Alarcon family and of Diego Murcia, the hotel's ruthless general manager, who is also in love with Alicia; subsequent events - including conspiracies, blackmail and murder - threaten to destroy Julio's and Alicia's chances of finding happiness together.'
I am not suggesting this as a definitive solution, but I wonder if something of this general nature might suffice. Chronarch (talk) 17:11, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 6 July 2019

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: No consensus. Considerable support does not outweigh the opposition contending the 'd' is sufficient distinction despite usage of the 'd' in some references to the Spanish series in some English sources. (non-admin closure) В²C 20:18, 24 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

– This is a simple question: is the addition or omission of a single "d" in the title enough under WP:SMALLDETAILS to distinguish these two series, or do they need additional "by country" disambigation under WP:NCTV in order to fully distinguish these two articles. For background, the American TV series is a clear adaptation of the Spanish series, so as per WP:NCTV's disambiguation instructions "by country" disambiguation is... "Generally the preferred disambiguation when shows are distinct due to region, especially when used to distinguish regional versions of the same format/premise. (emphasis mine) which would clearly seem to apply in this case. Also, the article on the American series was recently boldly moved from Grand Hotel (American TV series) to Grand Hotel (TV series) by Lowellian. (information Note: Page view stats – here – won't be very useful in this case, as the U.S. TV series is "new"...) So we need the consensus of editors voting support or oppose to determine whether WP:SMALLDETAILS or WP:NCTV carries the day here. Thank you. --IJBall (contribstalk) 16:01, 6 July 2019 (UTC) --Relisting. Steel1943 (talk) 00:06, 15 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose the "d" is sufficient to distinguish per WP:SMALLDETAILS especially since "Gran" and "Grand" sound different unlike some SMALLDETAILS cases we see. Crouch, Swale (talk) 16:54, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Weak support 2nd per Netoholic. Oppose 1st since a simple Google search doesn't show that the American one is known without the "d". Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:42, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose The proposed moves create unnecessary long and complicated disambiguation phrases when the series are already distinguished by having different base names. There is no conflict with WP:NCTV, whose guideline about disambiguation by region is for when disambiguation between TV series of the same title is required, which is not the case here since the base titles are already different. Furthermore, the Grand Hotel article already indicates in its introductory first sentence that it is based on and links to the Gran Hotel article, so users should have no trouble finding the other TV series. A {{distinguish}} hatnote could also be used. —Lowellian (reply) 17:15, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - given that these two series have a direct relation and could be mentioned in the same articles/contexts, the small difference is not enough. The Spanish series, in particular, is often called "Grand Hotel" in English sources and listed as such on Netflix, for example. -- Netoholic @ 17:30, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The base titles are already different, so that should be addressed with a {{distinguish}} hatnote instead of unnecessarily long disambiguation phrases. —Lowellian (reply) 23:37, 15 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - even the IMDb title used is "Grand", which means this is a likely title people will search it under. There is no reason to cause ambiguity and confusion to our readers. --Gonnym (talk) 23:00, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support – The US version is in fact the third version, the Spanish & the Egyptian (Secret of the Nile), set in The Grand Hotel. The only way to clarify is to identify that this is the US version. The US version will need to of an incredibly high standard to match the 2 earlier versions. Ourwindfall (talk) 09:42, 7 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Ourwindfall: I have refactored your recent Talk page post to this page because I think you mean to vote! support for this Requested move proposal... If I am in error, please restore your Talk page post to whichever version you see fit. Thanks! (information Note: I have also E-mailed Ourwindfall about this...) --IJBall (contribstalk) 02:30, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose both, from WP:DISAMBIGUATION: "Disambiguation is required whenever, for a given word or phrase on which a reader might search, there is more than one existing Wikipedia article to which that word or phrase might be expected to lead." I don't see how that applies here. Can someone provide evidence people are landing here due to a mistyping of "Grand" to justify such request, because according to dictionaries [1][2], and I cite Wiktionary gran in English means "slang for grandmother". Even Lover (album) is not disambiguated from Lovers (album) and it's in English. So no, use {{distinguish}} instead. © Tbhotch (en-2.5). 02:43, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
    • I believe Netoholic explained the opposing viewpoint – in English, all of the various versions of the series would be spelled "Grand Hotel" (and the Spanish series is even spelled that way in some of the English-language coverage), so there is a need to (fully) distinguish the Spanish and American (and other) versions from each other... I can see both sides of this one, but I probably lean in the direction that the additional disambiguation is the wiser choice here, and Gran Hotel (TV series) and Grand Hotel (TV series) should both probably point back to Grand Hotel#Entertainment and the arts... --IJBall (contribstalk) 02:53, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The request is not to move it to Grand Hotel (Spanish TV series), which would be a valid point. It is a request to clarify an unsourced ambiguity in the borderline of the true purpose of WP:DABing pages, i.e. avoiding ambiguity that conflicts titling pages. © Tbhotch (en-2.5). 03:01, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per Netoholic. - Brojam (talk) 03:59, 10 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per the points raised. I don't see why the Spanish series even needs the "Spanish TV series" in its article title. And the American series is quite clearly cancelation fodder with its weekly downward trend in viewership. If another American series with the same title is created in the future then yes something would need to be done for the American shows, but as things stand I don't see the issue.
