Criticism
[edit]- I'd be interested if someone could elaborate on how Gonzaga is "progressive". As an alumnus, I found the school to be quite conservative. SimonL 21:42, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
- The article claims the school has progressive ideals, not that it is progressive. The school has various social work programs, has made use of modern architecture in church and other buildings and had a history in the 1950s and 1960s of emphasis on education rather than exams. However it is essentially a traditional Irish Catholic private school that has the effect of preserving privilege amongst upper middle class Dublin families.Curtains99 12:33, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
- Fenian, if you could give some examples of bias from the article, I'd be happy to re-word it. "Its sounds like a typical 'D4' article" isn't exactly constructive criticism. SimonL 21:41, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
- Crap such as due in part to the use of entrance examinations to select pupils and to the socio-economic backgrounds of the parents of pupils who can afford the fees. What a load of crap. The public school I go to has entrance exams, its not a big deal. I could afford to go to Gonzaga. Its far from the most expensive school around. Get over yourself Gonzaga.--Play Brian Moore 22:12, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
- I think you may be right - this is speculation. Gonzaga may be achieving high academic results due to any number of factors, good teachers, wealthy parents paying for grinds, who knows? I just had a look at the Irish Times league tables for secondary schools (subscription required) from last year which rates schools according to the percentage of leaving cert students going on to third level education of any kind. This chart puts Gonzaga in 5th position in Dublin after St Conleths, Holy Child, CBC Monkstown and Coláiste Eoin. I think this data is more relevant than gueses as to why the school is performing well. Curtains99 14:28, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
Article quality.
[edit]Is it too much to ask that editors of this article — presumably, many of them are present or past pupils, or school staff — take the trouble to prove that they were educated properly by spelling and punctuating the article correctly? I have just spent some time fixing childish errors. It is advisable to say Gonzaga College rather than just Gonzaga, which borders on slang — which is fine for casual conversation. The phrase Gonzaga College should not be over-used. Substitutes such as the school or the college can help to avoid excessive repetition. The article requires more cited sources. 174.16.19.201 (talk) 07:38, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
Sports
[edit]What is the league cup? Is it a secondary competition for teams knocked out of the main tournament?Curtains99 16:08, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
I have resubmitted inaugural all Ireland school win in Frisbee. Is there a reason this should be deleted as previous correspondent has done? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikpandha181 (talk • contribs) 01:45, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
Notable former students
[edit]This has got to be one of the most heavily vandalised sections of any Wikipedia article I keep an eye on. Please, if you want to add notable students, give some sort of indicator of their notability. Simply adding names is not acceptable, especially when the person doesn't have an article in their own right. Wexcan (talk) 22:35, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
Title of article
[edit]The title of this article should be changed to 'Gonzaga College S.J.'. The 'S.J.' is an integral part of the school's name. —Preceding
Here here!
unsigned comment added by Aoduibh (talk • contribs) 19:39, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
- I disagree, the S.J. may be included optionally but it is not at all mandatory practice at the school itself. 174.16.34.24 (talk) 22:31, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
- Disagree: I second the disagreement: the S.J. is not necessary in the article title. The school is known widely as Gonzaga College. The S.J. is omitted from all other Irish Jesuit school Wikipedia article titles (see list). Articles concerning non-Jesuit schools in Dublin also omit such stylings as C.S.S.P. from the Wikipedia article titles (e.g. Blackrock and Rockwell Colleges) (see full list). Ischium (talk) 08:56, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
Gonzaga girls?
[edit]Didn't the school admit girls for a while in...the 1990s or early 2000s? When was it, how many girls were involved, how did the experiment work out, and why was it abandoned? Any details welcome and you can mention it in the article, especially if you have citations. --Ischium (talk) 18:14, 3 September 2010 (UTC)
Cambridge reference
[edit]I have deleted the lines 'A Gonzaga College education is expensive'. That is subjective and demeans the article. The Cambridge reference is also irrelevant. That is a university with different funding type and different aims to a second level school. It comes across as arrogant and self important to be frank. Legiglass (talk) 22:05, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
- I have removed it yet again. That's four users who believe this is an arrogant synthesis of published sources compared with one who believes it is sourced and merely a comparison. I hope it will not be reinserted without further discussion and explanation. --131.111.128.77 (talk) 14:21, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
- This has appeared again in the article. This has no place in the article let alone the opening paragraphs of the article. It is a pointless comparison. -- — Preceding unsigned comment added by Legiglass (talk • contribs) 20:05, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

Citation Needed?
[edit]I note that a lot of the notable past pupils have "citation needed" or "unreliable source" tags next to them. In many instances this can be cleared up by checking the archive of school annuals here at http://www.gonzagaarchive.ie/ - can these be added to Wikimedia? I don't think they have ISBN numbers as they weren't published for sale, but they are clearly reliable sources on the point of whether a boy attended Gonzaga or not. (the 1994 issue confirms that Andrew Scott, Conor Deasy and Finghin Collins attended, the 1988 issue confirms Manchán Magan did) Taibhseoir (talk) 16:27, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
