[edit]Does this belong on wiki.riteme.site? The majority of the article text is plainly not English. -- — I. Neschek | talk 22:50, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Real name
[edit]Why she has to change her name after suffering from asthma? Leung Wing Kei is said to be screen name in the article, so what is her actual present name? — Instantnood 00:48, May 26, 2005 (UTC)
Singer-songwriter
[edit]It's so cliche to say she is "not only as a singer, but a song writer and lyricist". But who can judge if she's qualified to be a true singer-songwriter? --Starryboy 07:26, 7 November 2005 (UTC)
- Some of the greatest hits of other singers, e.g. Hacken Lee, is composed by her. — Instantnood 09:03, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
Voice-actress
[edit]Is she really a voice-actress? I've removed the voice-actor-stub for now. 199.111.230.195 06:21, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
- Everybody who has been voice actress/or for several works is a voice actress/or. Nevertheless I can agree she's not notable for being a voice actress and thus tagging with that stub type. — Instantnood 09:03, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
- I would say "several works" should be a lot more than merely 3 productions. But thanks for agreeing with me on removing the tag anyway! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.111.230.195 (talk • contribs)
Fair use rationale for Image:Leung gigi.jpg
[edit]Image:Leung gigi.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:04, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
New section
[edit]I have added a section in the article called 'recent sitings'.Which i have listed the most recent siting of her, where, and for what reason. clcheung 20:21, 7 September 2007 (UTC) Wongdai
- ...that's kinda creepy. I think celebrities are as free to move around as we are -___-. And where is this section you speak of? Pandacomics 23:08, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
Its not creepy you fool! the information is for fans who have come on wikipedia to research her,and find out about her, which can,in future be constantly updated.Oh by the way the section i speak of,is of a public event she agreed to host herself so please leave your narrow minded comments to yourself next time! clcheung 22:43, 8 September 2007 (UTC) Wongdai
- First, be civil. Second, sightings are fairly trivial. It would be absurd to name every single program or street or autograph location where you saw her (simply because there are simply way too many of these occasions). And as trivial items go, they should either be included in the prose, or not included at all. As for your "this information is for fans who have come on wikipedia to research her", information on Wikipedia is for EVERYONE. Which means it's not just for the fans, which also means that trivial personal information about Gigi will most likely be of non-interest to the general audience. We could similarly put every single personal detail about Jay Chou, but the article is geared towards the general audience that reads Wikipedia. Lo and behold, that approach earned it a Featured Article star. Pandacomics 23:37, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
Year of birth
[edit]I have changed the year of birth given for her from 1972 to 1976 and deleted the three references because for years the media reported her year of birth as 1976 (e.g. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0504942/) and the references were to sources written in Chinese. If 1976 is incorrect, please use a reliable source written in English for an alternative year as this is the English wikipedia. Marsoult (talk) 02:41, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
- Regarding the recent edit and reply to my comment, my objection was not that the Chinese sources were unreliable; it was that they were in Chinese. This is the English Wikipedia. The Imdb link I gave was just one example. I lived in Hong Kong throughout the '90s and local media consistently reported her year of birth as 1976. If you google <"Gigi Leung" 1976>, numerous websites come up that give her year of birth as 1976 (e.g. the first 17 results). If you google <"Gigi Leung" 1972> the only sites in the first 20 results that give her year of birth as 1972 are two Wikipedia sites. Some explanation needs to be given in this article as to why her year of birth is given in Wikipedia as 1972 but as 1976 in most other sources, other than links to three articles that are incomprehensible to someone who doesn't read Chinese. I really don't want to get into an edit war. I would appreciate it if someone else could weigh in on this matter.Marsoult (talk) 11:46, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
- Personally(really), I prefer her to be younger :P but ok, it says her talent was found on the streets when she was 15, and officially signed to her first company in 1995. If she was born in 1976, that means she was 19 when she got signed. A 4 year difference between noticed, and signed. Which I think is quite appropiate. I mean, they couldn't really sign her up at the age of 15 right? So they waited till she was 19. BUT, if she was born in 1972, that means she got signed up when she was 23, waiting 8 years in total. Thing is-this is ALSO logical!!! Cause she went to university doing a designing course So MAYBE, i have to repeat, MAYBE they signed her up after completing university. So that's my analysis. Dengero (talk) 13:18, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
- But she earned a diploma, not a degree, so assuming she went to HK Poly U when she was 18, it's unlikely she would have graduated with a diploma (normally a 1- or 2-year course) when she was 23. Also, I read somewhere that she was signed up when she was at university, so 19 would make sense. In every source I come across on the Internet, I'm continuing to find her year of birth given as 1976. Also, although three sources are given in the article for 1972 as her year of birth, they in fact seem to be the same article published in three different publications. Although I can't read Chinese, the paragraphs that mention "1972" and "1976" seem to contain exactly the same characters, plus the dates of the articles are the same. I want to ask Pandacomics: why are you so sure that this single source for her year of birth is correct and all the numerous other sources are incorrect? Marsoult (talk) 15:15, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry I didn't reply to this earlier. The article says:

- Translation: The real age of many idols tends to be secret, but when Gigi Leung, who said she just celebrated her 30th birthday, went on the show "Astrology is Fun" (rough translation) yesterday, she accidentally revealed her real age. In contrast to the 1976 birth date that [Leung's] promoters gave the astrologers [on the show], Leung, who was afraid of being given the wrong fortune, took the initiative and said that she was born in 1972, and she was already 35, which gave her record company quite a heart attack. (the phrase literally means "cold sweats" but it's the same gist)
- I did a check on the articles via the Web Archive to see if the articles had been tampered since their initial publication date, and it turns out they hadn't. I also happened to find a copy of the show on Tudou, but I'll have to view it myself. There exists the possibility of her screwup being edited out, in which case, we'll probably have to include the 1972 issue in the prose as opposed to the infobox. As for the thing about her earning a diploma, if she was signed during her days at university, it's possible that, due to her new celebrity schedule, she'd have to work on her diploma part time. Pandacomics (talk) 18:51, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for providing the translation. If she can be heard saying on video that she was born in 1972, then I guess that's quite strong evidence. But I definitely think the Wikipedia article needs to give some account of the controversy in English, even if it's just a translation of the above paragraph. If she can't be heard saying it, then can we be sure that the original source of the claim is reliable? After all, there are plenty of tabloids in the UK and the USA that make up stuff about celebrities, and I'm sure there are in Hong Kong as well. Marsoult (talk) 21:05, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
The thing is, there are hardly any official english articles, if any at all. Most english site discussion etc etc actually uses wikipedia as a standard (well, at least the ones i participate in do. They always go, "Dengero you're wrong blah blah blah wiki says this blah blah). So we can't really use them back as a standard can we? Chinese sources are more reliable this way. If we want to push for a GA or even an FA, we need the artist to be internationally famous in order to have more english articles. Ppl like Jay Chou and Jackie Chan. Dengero (talk) 23:52, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
Reason: In 1995, Leung Wing Kei signed a contract to be a singer/actresses. She participated in the film acting and studied in Hong Kong Polytechnic when she was 19. In general, most of the Hong Kong youth will begin their university studying between 18 to 19. If birth date of Leung Wing Kei was 1972, she will be begun her university studying when she was 23. For the logical viewpoint, this is not matched the reason for the studying age of Hong Kong youth. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 210.17.202.194 (talk) 04:20, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
Final verdict
[edit]This is the video of the show that she appeared on: [1]
From 15:39 - 17:11 of the video, there is no conclusive evidence to confirm the newspaper article's claim that she said she was born in 1972. None whatsoever. The astrologist said that she was born in a year with a 丙 in it. That character is one of the Heavenly Stems of the Chinese calendar. The only year in the 1970s with a 丙 in it is the year 1976. Contrary to what the newspaper article said, Gigi Leung did not object to the astrologist explaining the significance of the Heavenly Stem that she was born under, so it appears that the article provided false information. Pandacomics (talk) 22:44, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm, somehow this is all a bit too formal Chinese for me, but Wiktionary says it's "three", not "six"... ★Dasani★ 21:43, 17 January 2009 (UTC)
- We're talking about chinese astrology not the number haha. And to put down this argument, here's an article on Oriental Daily today that says she's 32 specifically. While I believe she might be hiding her age, wikipedia isn't a detective agency, so all we need to do is to write down what the subject says, then perhaps suggest flaws in what they are saying in the article.
