Adding photos
[edit]Is someone able to add a photo for this page? Charlotte Beaucannon (talk) 09:40, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
- Charlotte Beaucannon Adding photos of musicians can be difficult as existing photos found on the internet generally cannot be used. The easiest way to get a photo in this article is to take one yourself and upload it. Other ways require determining whether the copyright of a photo permits its use on Wikipedia.
- I'm wondering if you are associated with this band; certain policies may apply if you are. 331dot (talk) 09:51, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply, I’m glad to be learning as I go. Are photos that others have taken and uploaded via Instagram okay to publish? I’m not associated with this band, I have just been following their work for a while. Charlotte Beaucannon (talk) 10:20, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
- No, most photos anywhere on the internet are not suitable for use on Wikipedia unless the photographer themselves uploads the image. Wikipedia's license allows reuse of content for any purpose(including commercial) with attribution.
- If the photo comes with a copyright notice that it may be freely used in a way that fits with Wikipedia's license, it may be uploaded by anyone, but it is on the uploader to demonstrate that. It would need to be explicitly stated with wherever the photo is, as copyright is assumed to be with the photographer. Please see WP:UPIMAGE for more information.
- Band publicity photos might be okay, but again, the licence would need to be compatible, as if the photo is on Wikipedia it could theoretically be copied and sold(i.e. on promotional products) as long as attribution is provided, and the band would not be entitled to a penny. All this is why I said the easiest thing to do is to upload an image you took yourself. 331dot (talk) 10:38, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
- I appreciate the thorough information, thank you for your help. Charlotte Beaucannon (talk) 10:48, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
