Arrival in US
[edit]According to Simon Winchester in his book Pacific, Freeth was 'discovered' by Jack London in Hawaii. London wrote about Freeth in a variety of magazines and Freeth subsequently asked London for a letter of introduction and then proceeded to California. Henry Huntington then saw Freeth surfing off Venice Beach and hired him to surf at Redondo Beach to publicize Huntington's Redondo Hotel. Updates on George Freeth's ancestry
[edit]Current research dispels stories that Freeth was Irish. See Moser's Surf and Rescue: George Freeth and the Birth of California Beach Culture (p. 8 and notes on p. 178) for that tradition. See the Wikipedia article on his great-grandfather, Sir James Freeth. His grandfather was James Holt Freeth (1817-1904), who ended his career as a major general. Pickbard (talk) 13:42, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
- Done I changed the category from Category:American people of Irish descent to Category:American people of English descent. The body of the article mentions English descent but not Irish descent. Peaceray (talk) 16:41, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you Peaceray. I appreciate the information.Pickbard (talk) 07:49, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
There is information missing on his young adult life. I wonder where this might get uncovered. Talahuhta (talk) 00:12, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
