Gemma Chan is a British-born Chinese

[edit]

Will Stardaemon66 please stop reverting Gemma to an English actress; Gemma is a British-born Chinese. She is British and not English. Stardaemon66 even tried to justify his edits by referring to Wiki's article on English people, specifically on the part: "Today some English people have recent forebears from other parts of the United Kingdom while some are also descended from more recent immigrants from other European countries and from the Commonwealth." Neither of Gemma's parents is from other European countries or the Commonwealth. Her mother is from China, and her father from Hong Kong, which was not and is not a part of the Commonwealth; it was a colony. 81.156.243.180 (talk) 22:50, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Stardaemon66, I have reverted your last edit where you changed British-born Chinese to British. At least you are not referring her as English any more. However British-born Chinese already captures the Britishness of Gemma, and is a more informative description of Gemma. 81.156.243.180 (talk) 23:06, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Stardaemon66, please stop playing silly buggers. I have reverted your last edit yet again. British-born Chinese concisely captures a lot of information about Gemma. Your justification for the edit is not water-tight, as you do not know whether she holds any other nationalities. 81.156.243.180 (talk) 23:29, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

81.156.243.180, you are very likely to get blocked if these disruptive edits continue. She is clearly a British actress, albeit of Chinese origin, not a "British-born Chinese actress", as the article stated until I changed it. I see no roles in Chinese or Chinese-language productions. I don't know anything about her ethnic identity, but in her professional capacity as an actress, she is clearly British. --Hegvald (talk) 14:54, 18 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hegvald, I have now fixed your objection. The article is about Gemma Chan as a complete person and not just her in her professional capacity as you stated above. I have therefore included your point that she is a British actress, as well as the fact that she is a British-born Chinese, which is linked to another Wikipedia article of the same. This clarification is perfectly acceptable in Wikipedia to describe other actors, such as Dikran Tulaine who is described as an English-Armenian actor. Hegvald, what exactly have you got against Gemma being correctly labelled as a British-born Chinese, when the term is perfectly acceptable in the UK? Hegvald, are you a racist against Chinese people? 213.1.8.136 (talk) 01:36, 16 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
And BTW Hegvald, Gemma Chan was a British-born Chinese before she was an actress. 213.1.8.136 (talk) 01:38, 16 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Then how come Dikran Tulaine is described as an English-Armenian actor in Wikipedia? 213.1.8.136 (talk) 01:27, 16 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
We don't call Antonin Scalia "an American-born Italian." Likewise, there's no reason call Chan "a British-born Chinese". Her ethnicity has nothing to do with her notability, which is for being a model and actress. --Tenebrae (talk) 04:49, 16 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Tenebrae, you might not but WE do. In the same way Barack Obama is called an African-American and Dikran Tulaine is an English-Armenian. If it is correct information, then it belongs to Wikipedia. 213.1.8.136 (talk) 00:57, 17 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You're edit-warring. When you're reverted you're supposed to go to the talk page and try and reach consensus with other editors, not re-revert. If you revert again, I'll contacting an admin. --Tenebrae (talk) 01:32, 17 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Tenebrae, you are the one who is editwarring. You are behaving irrationally, unreasonably and erratically. I have answered your concerns, and pointed out your errors in your arguments, and yet you still behave as though your views are the only ones that matters. Here's another Wikipedia article, this time on Brian Burrell, who is described as a Hong Kong American actor. Tenebrae, you should go back to editting comics as clearly other articles are out of your depth. 213.1.8.136 (talk) 02:21, 17 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Other registered editors above disagree with your stance, with goes against Wikipedia Manual of Style. Rather than attempt to gain consensus, you unilaterally made a violative edit. I am asking an admin to intervene. --Tenebrae (talk) 02:36, 17 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
In which case, your editwarring is unjustified, as "other registered editors" cannot count as a consenses. 213.1.8.136 (talk) 01:43, 20 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Specifically, since you evidently will not read the pertinent guidelines MOS:BLPLEAD says, ""Ethnicity, religion, or sexuality should generally not be in the lead unless it is relevant to the subject's notability". As User:Hegvald explained, she is a British-born citizen of England and her ethnicity has played no part in her notability as a model and actress. --Tenebrae (talk) 02:51, 17 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Since when did she achieve notability as a model? 213.1.8.136 (talk) 01:39, 20 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Guidelines are just that, guidelines. You should refer back to Jimmy Wales' reason for establishing Wikipedia. 213.1.8.136 (talk) 01:40, 20 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

213, I am waiting for you to go off changing Dante Gabriel Rossetti into a "British-born Italian poet and painter" and Queen Victoria into a "British-born German queen". --Hegvald (talk) 04:31, 20 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Why should I? Rossetti is already an Italian name and Queen Victoria like most European royalties was mixed and therefore not German. You go ahead and do it if you want. However your provocation does not change the fact that Gemma Chan is a full-blooded Chinese person. 159.180.98.82 (talk) 01:32, 29 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dami Im is called an Autralian-Korean in the lede of her Wiki article: Dami Im (Hangul: 임다미; RR: Im Dami, born 17 October 1988) is an Australian-Korean singer and songwriter. Born in South Korea, Im emigrated to Australia with her family at the age of nine. Im won the fifth season of The X Factor Australia and subsequently received a recording contract with Sony Music Australia. Come on Hegvald, are you going to delete that, we are all waiting? 217.35.246.86 (talk) 01:12, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
He was born in South Korea. Chan was born in the UK. Big difference. --Tenebrae (talk) 18:16, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The only difference is in your brain. 165.120.146.80 (talk) 23:51, 15 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Caroline Wyatt in Wikipedia lede : "Caroline Wyatt (born 1967) is an Australian-born English journalist." Therefore it would be completely legitimate to say Gemma Chan is a British-born Chinese actor/ress. 165.120.146.80 (talk) 23:51, 15 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
First, don't be insulting. Second, MOS:OPENPARA says, "Context (location or nationality): In most modern-day cases this will mean the country of which the person is a citizen, national or permanent resident, or if notable mainly for past events, the country where the person was a citizen, national or permanent resident when the person became notable." Third, Wyatt is living and working in England, whereas Chan is not living and working in China. --Tenebrae (talk) 00:12, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Gemma Chan's view http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-42859476 2A00:23C5:C10B:A300:6CAA:D8E2:67CF:F2D6 (talk) 09:07, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, that source says nothing about her being Chinese. --Ebyabe talk - Opposites Attract09:22, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Was she born in London? Was she born in china? Seems clear that she is English. ---Dagme (talk) 14:44, 8 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Drama Centre

[edit]

'Prestigious and notoriously tough' - tough to get into (fits context), or very demanding once you're in? Or both?

'her showcase' - what's that?

Am not slagging the existing text - just want to clarify. Regards to all.

You're correct — that's pure WP:PEACOCK. I've made the WP:TONE more encyclopedic. --Tenebrae (talk) 04:03, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What's the point of adding a Chinese spelling of her name?

[edit]

If she's British, born in the UK, what's with the Chinese spelling? If only because of her Chinese background, would we do the same if her stage name was Smith? Are we supposed to do the same with Hindi or Jewish names? For how many generations? This is pretty pointless. 2A02:AA13:8100:7880:2CF8:D3CA:1C1D:51F2 (talk) 22:48, 12 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Overdone?

" Chan starred in Exam (2009)" -- Chan's character leaves early in the film. Isn't "starred" a mischaracterization? 2600:6C67:1C00:5F7E:6857:B886:ECB:A692 (talk) 01:36, 15 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Female Spock in The IT Crowd

[edit]

Although not credited she did the female Spock role in that scene as well (s04e06 'Reynolds vs. Reynolds'). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:8109:AB8F:7800:B77D:450D:5D9:1D9F (talk) 14:44, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
