Expansion

[edit]

How about expanding this article? For example, what countries do not outlaw forced marriage? What is the UN's take? What groups exist to provide help? Stargoat (talk) 16:24, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know how to fix this because there isn't a source and I don't know the story to which this sentence refers, but there is something wrong with this sentence: "For example, a mother promised her sister that she would marry her daughter to his son before the daughter was even born." Maybe "his" should be "her sister's"? I don't know how to tag it properly either. Christopherjfoster (talk) 15:51, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Shotgun Weddings

[edit]

I have no referance, but I do believe in Shotgun weddings, a best man or some other friend/relative of the groom or bride would shoot a shotgun into the air, hence Shotgun wedding. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alexthegod5 (talkcontribs) 02:00, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have a reference either, but I thought that the term "Shotgun Wedding" was not referring to the coercive threat of violence, but of the typical shotgun having two barrels or other ability for a quick "follow up" shot. The "follow up" shot in this case being the child on the way. 75.84.189.218 (talk) 08:54, 2 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Male vs. Female

[edit]

"In most but not all forced marriages, it is the female (rather than the male) who is the involuntary spouse"

This is the most ridiculous statement I have ever heard. Somebody is imagining that most if not all the girls involved are "prizes", which many certainly are not [citation: personal experience]. Wikipedia really needs to clean-up stuff like this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.161.141.33 (talk) 01:04, 22 September 2010 (UTC) Wikipedia needs to clean it up? Why? are you to busy? Or don't you feel it's that important enough to warrant your time being spent on it? Also, how does the quoted text offer evidence that 'somebody is imagining....girls involved are prizes'? (PS: please don't use your personal experience as a citation) If you wish to make a criticism or counter-claim against the articles content, justify it, don't shout then run away! We might value your input!!!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.149.183.71 (talk) 18:11, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This article has left something out

[edit]

I think this article should mention that forced marriage isn't legal anywhere in the world. Marriages without the approval of both parties are now banned worldwide by a UN resolution. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sonicthemeatball (talkcontribs) 20:15, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Forced marriages are legal in Saudi Arabia, for example. They should be illegal anywhere in the world, but actually they are not. (Metron (talk) 01:21, 5 January 2013 (UTC))[reply]

Deleting the subsection about shotgun weddings in East Asia

[edit]

I deleted the subsection about shotgun weddings in East Asia, because it is almost the same as the section 'In East Asia' in Shotgun wedding. Furthermore, strictly speaking, this subsection does not deal with forced marriage. The link to the article 'Shotgun Wedding' is enough. Moreover, I made the new section 'Forced Marriage during the Khmer Rouge period in Cambodia'. This section was a subsection of the 'Shotgun Wedding' section, but it had little relation to shotgun weddings. さえぼー (talk) 06:11, 14 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Merge in "shotgun wedding"?

[edit]

What do you folks thing about merging the https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Shotgun_wedding ? The current page is short on content, much of which is duplicated here. --Frozenport (talk) 19:10, 9 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Merge in "servile wedding"?

[edit]

Suggest merging https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Servile_marriage . that page is very brief, overlapping in meaning and even citing the same 1956 UN reference as basis for a definition. --BackwardsBoy (talk)

Forced marriage and rape

[edit]

I'm very perplexed that forced marriage is not considered as equivalent to rape.

By comparison, in the case of consensual albeit underage sex, subject to the approval of either the parents or a judge, yet there seems to be an insistence that this should be treated as equivalent to rape, here we have a case of persons being mandated into a marriage against their will, and we seem to be quite careful not to call this rape.

Then there's the simple case of prohibiting any marriage involving a person under age 18 from entering into a marriage, regardless of this being authorized by statute and in the absence of any indication of undue pressure.

The inherent definition of rape is being required to participate in sex against one's will, which seems to be implicit in forced marriage, but this perspective seems to be missing from this article. Fabrickator (talk) 07:17, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
