Other than the first part, this article is very poorly written!

Some comments:
(1) The first one to write down the Vassiliev invariants of order 2 and 3 in terms of chord diagrams was Lannes:

(2) Who is Turaeva? Could it be that it is in fact Svetlana Tyurina? E.g. http://arxiv.org/abs/math/9905162 ?

The "combinatorial definition of finite type invariant" attributed here to "Goussarov, and (independently) Joan Birman and Xiao-Song Lin" is explicitly given in the very first Vassiliev's paper (pp.26-27, available through Google Scholar -> va vassiliev) as a "geometric interpretation" of his construction. Then it was quoted in the referative part of Birman-Lin article and became the main definition since that, while Goussarov did not used singular knots, working with alternated sums of non-singular knot diagrams only. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.179.218.11 (talk) 07:21, 29 September 2011 (UTC)
