Ben-Jochannan as source

[edit]

I've removed the quote from Ben-Jochannan. The book doesn't appear to be a reliable source. Ben-Jochannan says that Dubois was Black and gives a quote that differs from the text in the actual book:

Ben-Jochannan (1988) p. 168

This accomplishment brings the greatest honor to the black race and merits, from this view point, all our attention. In the 16th Century, the Songhay land awoke. A marvelous growth of civilization mounted there is the heart of the Black continent... And this civilization was not imposed by circumstances, nor by an invader, as is often the case even in our day. It was desired, called forth, introduced and perpetuated by a man of the Black race...

Dubois (1896) p. 117

A wonderful impulse was imparted to this country in the sixteenth century, and a marvellous civilisation appeared in the very heart of the black continent. This civilisation was not imposed by circumstances and force, as is so often the case, even in our own countries, but was spontaneously desired, evoked, and propagated by a man of the negro races. Unfortunately, its fairest promises were never fulfilled, owing, not so much to the native successors, as to the civilised (some say white) peoples who ruthlessly destroyed all this good seed, and caused the tares of barbarism to sprout anew.

Dubois (1897) pp. 135-136

Saint-Martin 1986

[edit]

The wiki article cites an article by Saint-Martin which is available online as a pdf. At the end of the pdf the source is indicated as "L'ACADEMIE DES SCIENCE OUTRE MER. Hommes et Destins, 7 tom. 1975-1986. The pdf also has large page numbers printed on the pages.

I noticed that another of the cited articles, Le Quellec 2008, cites an article by Saint-Martin with the same title - but in volume 5 of Hommes et Destins, and with different page numbers. This volume is available online (Vol 7 is not). It seems unlikely that Vol 7 contains the same article - so the reference at the end of the pdf is wrong. Although the text appears to be identical, the pagination of the pdf and the online Hommes et Destins article differ. I'm updating the article to use the page numbers in the online Hommes et Destins article - which could take me some time. I've included the link to the pdf at the end of the reference. Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request its removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.
