In New Zealand, 78% of the population is White according to their census, apart from thousands of part-white maories. Apart from the 69% who define themselves as "European New Zealanders", there are another 9% who are White but define themselves just as "New Zealander".--83.53.170.206 (talk) 03:30, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'd agree the current text is misleading, but your version doesn't seem much better to me. The NZ Census doesn't gather information on race (or European descent as such) and doesn't class anyone as "White". If a part-Maori person also identifies as NZ European, they will be already counted as NZ European, so we shouldn't imply they'd increase the European total. And while most people in the "New Zealander" group are probably of European descent, there would be many exceptions. I do agree adding something about that group would be useful, but it needs some care. --Avenue (talk) 12:08, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
