Redirect target

[edit]

@Gandalfett: There seems to be some confusion related to this redirect. "Han Chinese" is not a synonym for "ethnic Chinese". Rather, Han Chinese are just one subgroup of ethnic Chinese (other subgroups include the Bai, Zhuang, Li, and many others). Our article about ethnic Chinese in general is at Chinese people. —Mx. The Bai, Zhuang and Li people are Austroasiatic and Vietic people, related to Southeast Asian people. They are just about as Chinese as Uyghurs, Tibetans, and Mongols, all of whom are not ethnic Chinese despite what the Chinese officials say. Gandalfett (talk) 19:20, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As usually conceived, "ethnic Chinese" is a broad category that includes multiple ethnic groups (Han, Bai, Zhuang, etc.). See e.g. this source, which says "Chinese ethnicity is constituted by different ethnicities. These multiple elements make it a pan-Chinese ethnicity". It's easy to find sources that use the phrase this way, such as this source that mentions "Han and Uygur ethnic Chinese patients".
That said, I see that some sources do seem to use "ethnic Chinese" when they mean "Han Chinese". Maybe the best solution would be to make this a disambiguation page. —Mx. Granger (talk · contribs) 19:55, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Seeing no response, I'll make the disambiguation page. Hopefully that will resolve this issue. —Mx. Granger (talk · contribs) 13:43, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
