The image shows an equinox, not boreal winter. The lighting suggests the earth is viewed from the perspective of the sun, because it is always fully lit. The earth's axis of rotation is perpendicular to the line from earth to sun, giving all hemispheres equal lighting. For it to be boreal winter, the earth would need to be illuminated from the left side of the photo. I believe as shown it's the vernal (spring) equinox.
