"Retirement" section: Taiwan

[edit]

Given the context (the 1894 Sino-Japanese war) I wasn't sure if the wikilink I added to "Taiwan" should go to geography of Taiwan or to Taiwan under Qing rule. It definitely should be linked; it's the first mention of Taiwan in the article. I used the geography article because its page preview seemed more helpful. I wouldn't object if someone changed it. Box with the written Chinese name

[edit]

The sign for „imperial“ 皇 is missing at the 3rd place. Correct is: 慈禧皇太后 What‘s written now (2023/12/13) means „Dowager Cixi“ 2A02:908:1A73:FF20:5022:C2BE:3599:8E89 (talk) 16:58, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Photograph or painting in infobox

[edit]
Cixi c. 1904
Portrait by Hubert Vos, 1905

Should the infobox use a photograph or a painting of Cixi? — Goszei (talk) 08:31, 30 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Photograph. It is standard practice in infoboxes about historical figures to use a photograph when one is available, especially when it is a high quality one like this. This photograph is a more accurate representation of Cixi's appearance than any painting. — Goszei (talk) 08:31, 30 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Photograph. Higher quality as compared to the painting. As per Goszei, photographs are used for infoboxes when one is available. GodzillamanRor (talk) 11:53, 30 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Her power was periodical

[edit]

The notion that she "effectively" controlled the state overlooks the multiple factors on play: 1. Ci'an as co-regent who occasionally asserted her own authority (execution of An Dehai etc.) 2. Cixi was regent only occasionally. 3. Foreign powers virtually made China a semi-colony. What the h*ll effective?! Super20020917 (talk) 13:51, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You're seemingly misunderstanding the specific meaning of "effectively" here, which is not even mutually exclusive with "periodically". Remsense ‥  13:52, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, in that case I think we can reach a mutual agreement. The notion that it was "effective but periodical" should help the reader understand that her power was not omnipotent- effective but not total. Super20020917 (talk) 13:56, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I asked you to stop edit warring, not to re-insert your changes in a different way. Please self-revert so a discussion can properly take place. Remsense ‥  13:58, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I ask you to reach a compromise. I think this approach is more nuanced for not misleading the readers. Super20020917 (talk) 14:00, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Self-revert to the pre-dispute version, then we can check sources for what the wording might be. You're not entitled to unilaterally publish your disputed version. Remsense ‥  14:03, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
the one who wrote "effectively" is surely not a divine editor as well. Why was their edit left in place for so wrong and not a subject of your pedantry??? Super20020917 (talk) 14:05, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
for so *long Super20020917 (talk) 14:07, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
