Secondary sources: request for additions to article, regarding Scoraig
[edit]Suggested addition to article, with primary and secondary source:
Scoraig, Scotland
[edit]In 2018, Gold documented a community in the Scoraig peninsula in the north-west highlands of Scotland. "The remote UK community living off-grid". bbc.co.uk. 2018-11-19. Retrieved 2020-10-23. McFadden, Brendan (2018-11-26). "Britain's real-life castaways: The off-grid community who rejected the rat race to live on a remote Scottish peninsula where wind powers the homes and school". - WP:DAILYMAIL applies to the mail article. Joseph2302 (talk) 16:00, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- Seems a bit strange to blanket-ban the mail Online when they are quoting the BBC. Nevertheless, if that's the decision, then how about this secondary reference? "Living Off The Grid – Can It Be Done In The UK?". thepublicpurse.org.uk. 2019-10-02. Retrieved 2020-10-23. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:00, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- These secondary references are quite easy to find if you Google the BBC "in-pictures" ID. Here's another.... Palin, Alan (2019-02-27). "Walking the Coast of Great Britain:Scoraig Circular". Retrieved 2020-10-23. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:08, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- But... Michael D. Turnbull there is no mention of ED Gold in either sources, let alone any in-depth coverage as required. Theroadislong (talk) 17:31, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- We seem to be going round in circles here. The BBC (primary) source says "Earlier this year, photographer Ed Gold lived alongside the community, documenting people's lives and exploring what drove them to move to this remote location" and all the photograph's in the account are by Gold. The (secondary) source from thepublicpurse has that article as a "resource" and explicitly gives the weblink to it. Alan Palin's article says "I opened the small iron doors of the lighthouse to reveal a small room with a series of info boards on the wall depicting life in the Scoraig community. I recently read a small piece on the BBC website about Scoraig, the link is below" confirming a) that the BBC article is read by people interested in Scoraig and b) that photographs by Gold are part of that communities own local history. There is a third confirmatory article in the Mail Online (deprecated in general as a WP source but here merely confirming what all the other sources say). As WP editors, it is up to us to decide which of these references should go into the article to back up the fact of the existence of the primary source: and that source, as I've said before, is not as "primary" as some are given that the BBC, not Gold, has editorial control and responsibility for what they publish on their "in pictures" articles. Are you asserting that Gold did not spend time in Scoraig and that he never had a role there as a professional photojournalist? Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:52, 24 October 2020 (UTC)

- No I am asserting that unless there are secondary sources that discuss him in-depth then we don't have the content about him, and The daily Mail is of no use whatsoever to Wikipedia. Theroadislong (talk) 13:01, 24 October 2020 (UTC)
images
[edit]Even if the images now have the correct license, they do need to illustrate the article content, what does Margaret Thatcher visiting Parachute Regiment have to do with the article's subject? Theroadislong (talk) 13:30, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
- Gold is a photographer and these images illustrate his work: isn't that what readers would hope to see in a Wikipedia article? Taking, for example, Karimeh Abbud a photographer whose work is now out of copyright and so can be included in the article on her, there is a whole gallery of images illustrating examples (in the form of postcards, in her case). Unusually for a BLP, we have correctly licensed images of Gold's work and can therefore include a selection of them. If you think it would be better to explicitly place these images in a "Gallery" section at the bottom of the article, that's fine by me. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:16, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
- But the photograph is NOT mentioned in the article? Is it a notable work by him? Has it been the subject of in-depth discussion by reliable sources? We don't just stick random pictures of work in without context. Theroadislong (talk) 14:20, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
- As I said, the photographs are there as examples of his work. If you would prefer to use different examples, then please do so, there are many available. It would be strange, I think, not to take the opportunity to improve an article on a photojournalist by including some of his imagery. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:31, 31 October 2020 (UTC)

- Indeed, the images don't add any understanding of the subject (and I really question why there are multiple sections about different projects he has been involved with, sourced only to the projects themselves!) I have removed the parachute regiment images. Since this article should not be a display case of the person's work, the images don't actually improve the article. --bonadea contributions talk 16:24, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
- Added: The case where one of Gold's own images would be relevant in the article is if that specific image had been discussed by secondary sources, or if it for instance was displayed in a museum. --bonadea contributions talk 16:33, 31 October 2020 (UTC)

Specific Text to be added please
[edit]Valereee and other editors,
In the Ed Gold article it is written that I rode my motorcycle to Ukraine to document a 'pyrolysis' project. I did, but in fact I rode my motorcycle to Ukraine twice in 3 months in 2023. (It took 6 days riding each way, from UK to Ukraine, so 24 days of riding). The 2nd time I rode back to Ukraine was to star in a movie about the Russian genocide of Ukrainian children. I have online news links here as proof, please can you include to the Wikipedia article? (If you use Google Chrome browser, it should translate the page automatically to English).
Specific text to be added:

Thank you for your time and help. EddieLeVisco (talk) 16:42, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hey, Ed. #1 and #2 don't seem to mention you. We can't use YouTube or Facebook. Valereee (talk) 20:15, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for your fast reply Valereee I am mentioned in both articles, I honestly would not waste your time, I assure you.
- In #1 web news article, if your browser is translating to English, please count down to the 36th line and you will see "The director of the film "Save the Grasshopper" Oleksandr Kiriyenko proposed the candidacy of Ed Gold - a journalist and photojournalist..."
- and on line 38 and 39 it reads "He has an interesting perspective on what he sees, interesting photo books. During filming, Ed moves around the cities on his motorcycle, which he brought with him from England. Next, we developed a plan, looked for stories not only of children who suffered in that tragedy, but also of heroes who would confirm the theses of genocide."
- In #2 web news article, if you count down to the 61st line you will see "Our English friend Ed Gold was a little more lucky, because he heard these stories already in translation. And in translation they do not sound so shrill. I am sure that if he heard the "straight" language, he would also cry."
- and on the 73rd line "We had three candidates for the role, and in the end we chose Ed Gold. He is a very interesting person: journalist, traveler, photographer. He rides a motorcycle, lives in a tent while traveling and publishes very colorful books with his photographs. He is very sensitive and sincere, and since he had already been to Ukraine before, he immediately responded to our proposal. It was very comfortable and interesting to work with him."
- There are also 2 photos of me in #1 story and 1 photo of me in #2 story.
- Please make sure that your web browser can translate into English and you will indeed see that I am mentioned. It was a great deal of time and effort to go to Ukraine, so I would be most grateful if you can include that I starred in this movie after the article mentions I motorcycled to document the pyrolysis project on my first trip and include the web article links. I can include the dates of both trips if you like.
- Thank you for your time. EddieLeVisco (talk) 02:18, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hey, Ed! Hm, I'm on Chrome, and it does translate, but for some reason the mentions are coming up on search for me this morning. I've added it. Valereee (talk) 11:34, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
Hi Valereee Thank you very much for being so helpful and efficient, and sorry to have made such a messy request to you, I write too much I think. Sorry also for duplicate requests. EddieLeVisco (talk) 02:22, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
May 2024
[edit]Hi Valereee Please can you change the domain name on the Ed Gold Wikipedia page, from www.edgold.co.uk to [[[Wikipedia is blocking me typing this new URL, what can I do to show it to you?]]]. I stopped paying for a website a while ago, and have currently been linking my domain name 'www.edgold.co.uk' to my Facebook page. But it looks like I will have to delete my Facebook page, and no longer wish to have my own domain, so are you able to use the 'mystrikingly' website domain instead please? This link goes to my current, free website (I would have to pay to link www.edgold.co.uk to it). I'm not earning enough to justify spending on unnecessary items like this. Thank you for your help. Ed EddieLeVisco (talk) 06:45, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
- What comes between "http://www." and ".mystrikingly.com"? Valereee (talk) 12:31, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
Thank you very much for your fast reply Valereee. What comes is exactly: diligent-canary-k5sq9c
I have also shortened this URL, using TINYURL but using a shortened URL here and on a Wikipedia article isn't allowed. I have now cancelled my domain name, so hope this new one will be able to be displayed on the article. Thank you for your help and time as always. Ed EddieLeVisco (talk) 13:31, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hm, that's what I was wondering -- mystrikingly.com is blacklisted. Let me see if I can find out why, but it probably has to do with people creating websites there to spam Wikipedia with links. It looks like there's only one article that uses a link to that domain, and I'm guessing it was added before the domain was added to the blacklist and that the next time someone tries to edit it, they won't be able to save it with that still included. This may not be something we can fix, but I'll check. Valereee (talk) 15:08, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
Valereee Thank you so much Valeree. If I cannot show people a website, it will look very bad, and today I was forced to delete all my social media apart from YouTube (I employed a corrupt marketing company to market my social media, and they got me to sign a bogus contract which they are now pursuing me for). My website is all I have to show my current work and provide a link to Wikipedia.
If you cannot find a way to show my site, then I would have to resurrect my old domain name www.edgold.co.uk and pay $12 every month to have it linked to the current 'mystrikingly' site. The URL I use to shorten the 'mystrikingly' website URL is:
https://tiny url.com and /positivefuturesmagazine
which I don't think Wikipedia will allow as it is not the original URL. Thank you for helping. Ed EddieLeVisco (talk) 16:07, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
- What I'd recommend is that you go to MediaWiki_talk:Spam-whitelist and ask for the specific URL to be whitelisted. Valereee (talk) 18:17, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
Valereee Thank you very much Valeree! 82.153.27.162 (talk) 07:03, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
- Think I got it! Valereee (talk) 16:11, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
Hello Valereee Thank you for your input and help trying to get my current website URL whitelisted. As you point out, it might take a long time - so I tagged other editors (whitelist editors) also, in order to make the correction, but none have responded as of now. I am in a bit of a hurry as I go to Europe, from the UK, next week to continue with my projects, and I will not have time to keep an eye on this. Right now I am wondering if it would simply be easier to keep the www.edgold.co.uk domain name and link it to the 'mytsrikingly' site. However this will cost me at least $144 a year for the website and £10.20 for the domain name, costs which I wish to avoid as I am on a very tight budget and continue to live in a tent all year round.EddieLeVisco (talk) 12:48, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
- In general, it's not considered good form to mass ping people who work at a noticeboard. They'll have seen it, and it is actually counterproductive to nag. :) Some of us get dozens of pings daily. All of us get busy IRL; I spent the last two days helping my son move.
- I get it that this is urgent for you, but -- and I don't mean to seem harsh, you seem like a good guy -- we pretty much consider only a very few things urgent. Libelous content in a biography of a living person, threats of harm to self or others, that's about it. Something being simply outdated gets dealt with when some volunteer has the time, capacity, and willingness. If you learn how to use Template:edit COI there are a bunch of people who check that category daily. Valereee (talk) 19:45, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
Valereee my utmost apologies. I see that the strikingly link that has been added to the Ed Gold article needs to be adjusted. Please could someone do this - I asked Strikingly for advice and they wrote:
You can give Wikipedia this link: https://diligent-canary-k5sq9c.mystrikingly.com/ or this link: diligent-canary-k5sq9c.mystrikingly.com/
Just make sure that there is no 'www.' added to the URL. I will also copy this to the whitelist page. Thank you very much for your time and help. EddieLeVisco (talk) 14:48, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
