"D" designation

[edit]

My understanding is that the D in GP20-D indicates dynamic brakes. Sans DB it would be called GP20, and be quite confusing, but correct. The little brother version, GP15, was never built (to my knowledge) with DB, so it was left as GP15. Clarification and correction is sought and appreciated. Actually, the GP15T variant was built with and without dynamic brakes. The GP15 series is much older than the (new) GP20D series, with the last GP15 having been built in 1983, and the GP20Ds being from the late 1990s or later. The two models are NOT part of the same "family", other than both being sold by EMD. The GP20D was actually built and designed by Motive Power Industries, and was first sold by them as the MP2000D. In addition, the GP20D does not have an EMD engine, using a GM 16V170B20-T2 four stroke engine. Wuhwuzdat (talk) 19:49, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No, not THAT GP15. The GP15 I refer to is darn near identical to the MP GP20D of this article. Like the MP GP20, it MAY also have been sold as MP1500. CEFX had a few under lease to UP in Houston, #15xx -vs- the GP20D in the #20xx range. Ken (talk) 20:48, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
After a bit of research, it would appear that the "D" stands for Diesel, as a continuation of the MK/MPI/Wabtec history of designating the type of fuel used by each locomotive model. This started with the MK1200G Liquid Natural Gas fueled switcher. Wuhwuzdat (talk) 16:30, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
