Article rename
[edit]Recently an editor renamed this article, from "Donna Jean and the Tricksters" to "Donna Jean Godchaux Band with Jeff Mattson". I have a few reservations about this. (1) The rename was done by creating the new article and then editing the old article to be a redirect. This is not the correct way to rename an article. Generally an article should be renamed using the "Move" tab. See Help:Moving a page for a lot more information about this. Here's a quote: "You should never just move a page by cutting all the text out of one page, and pasting it into a new one; old revisions, notes, and attributions are much harder to keep track of if you do that." (2) Usually it's best to discuss a possible rename on the article's talk page first, since it's such a big change. So, belatedly, let's discuss the rename now. On the plus side, a reference was added documenting that the band has been renamed. But, is the new name of the band "The Donna Jean Godchaux Band with Jeff Mattson", or "The Donna Jean Godchaux Band"? (3) Should there be one article, or two -- one for Donna Jean and the Tricksters, and one for the new named band? The first band put out an album under the name Donna Jean and the Tricksters. The second band has a somewhat different lineup. In conclusion, so far I'm not sure what I think about all this. — Mudwater (Talk) 02:14, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
- My mistake - I wasn't aware of the 'move' procedures and will make sure to use them in future when necessary. The name of the band, according to all articles I have located and their official website includes "with Jeff Mattson". Also, I think since the band has 'evolved' [1] into this new lineup, it is my opinion that there should be only one article, which includes information about the lineup change, however discussion on this matter is much appreciated. - Addionne (talk) 13:25, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
- That all sounds pretty reasonable to me. If it's agreeable to other editors, I guess we could just leave things the way they are now. — Mudwater (Talk) 23:56, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
- Another editor has renamed the article, from "Donna Jean Godchaux Band with Jeff Mattson" to "Donna Jean Godchaux Band". Since this is a significant change, and one that was already discussed in this talk page section, it would have been better if there had been further discussion about this first. But, now that the rename has already been done, should we leave it this way? I would suggest doing so, because it still seems to me that the "with Jeff Mattson" part is not really part of the band name, although I admit it's a bit of a gray area. As usual all editors are invited to join the discussion. — Mudwater (Talk) 02:09, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
- Looks like I came along fairly late here, but agree with the new title, particularly because it appears that the band frequently headlines as an act using the same name as the article name. I'm looking for a band photograph for them.. if anyone can help shed light on the band members, perhaps beginning pages for them, or wikifying those that may already exist, it would be helpful.--Leahtwosaints (talk) 00:32, 22 March 2010 (UTC)
