Questions for article help

[edit]

I'm quite dedicated to making sure this article one day becomes a WP:Good Article. As you can see, last time it was deleted because it was absolutely atrocious and heavily waded in in-universe information. If you don't want to answer feel free not to. I'm grateful that this article has finally received non-bot edits from someone else by the way! Anyway, User:SephyTheThird, if the Sakuya and Zephyr items had references, could they be reworked into the other media section (I'm using Vegeta as a model template by the by). Also, what makes the illustrations unencyclopedic? Not sourced enough? --DawnDusk (talk) 20:45, 12 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It's good that someone has taken a previously removed article and made an improvement, and in general I think the article has had a good start in that it's got sourced reception. I would suggest not using Vegata as a template and instead use something like Edward Elric as that is a good article. If thats your aim it makes more sense to use an article that has achieved that status as a comparison. As for the illustrations, my issue was that I couldn't find anything to show why these illustrations or their creator were "important". I could find no reliably sourced information about the artist or why they should be considered any different from normal fan work. Nothing that would suggest we should mention them. As for references by other works, it needs to be reliably sourced, even if it's "obvious". For example Daisuke Jigen is in the background of an episode of Animaniacs and it's easily verifiable by looking at a still of the scene, however I've yet to find a single reliable source that mentions it so it's not included. However I can include the references to him in a chapter of Excel Saga as the cultural and translation notes in the back of the book discuss it.SephyTheThird (talk) 04:35, 13 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Those are all really good points, especially the fact about Vegeta. A reworking of the article will eventually be needed! I see what you mean about the sourcing too: I've found a source for the Sakuya reference. Thanks for taking the time to give such a helpful reply! --DawnDusk (talk) 00:52, 14 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Za Warudo

[edit]

I tried finding an archived version of www.sunglass711.com/ray-ban/ray-ban-clubmaster-sunglasses-black/history.html, but couldn't. Leaving it as a "dead link" is not the ideal thing to do, but without more information I am not sure what should be used for the template parameters. You cannot really use a citation template if all you know is the url (e.g., {{cite web|url=<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.sunglass711.com/ray-ban/ray-ban-clubmaster-sunglasses-black/history.html}}</ref>) because it the template will show "Missing or empty title" like the following[1] in the article.

References

  1. ^ https://www.sunglass711.com/ray-ban/ray-ban-clubmaster-sunglasses-black/history.html. {{cite web}}: Missing or empty |title= (help)

Even though we should try to fix or preserve dead links per WP:DEADREF and WP:PLRT, sometimes we simply can't. In such cases, it might be better to remove the link and add a citation needed template, especially when the "original url" is not really dead, but instead leads to an unrelated page advertising sunglasses for sale like this one does. - Marchjuly (talk) 03:02, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dio or DIO

[edit]

@Marchjuly: regarding your change of every instance of "DIO" to "Dio" - was that correct? The character officially goes by DIO in his Stardust Crusaders incarnation, and official games like All-star Battle Adventures distinguish between Dio, the Phantom Blood incarnation, and DIO, once he gains his stand. Is this simply a matter of, regardless, we only use one form of the name? --DawnDusk (talk) 05:19, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I was only trying to make the usage of the name consistent throughout the article and wasn't aware that the character is officially referred to using both "names" depending upon the context. So, please revert or undo the change as needed. It might, however, be a good idea to either explain the difference between the "names" either by actually adding information to the article or by using a hidden note so that others do not make a similar mistake. Anyway, thanks for catching my mistake. - Marchjuly (talk) 05:31, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps the same issue, much more minor of course, in changing "ZUN" to "Zun" the Touhou author. --DawnDusk (talk) 05:24, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the name of the author because it wasn't written in all caps on their Amazon.com page. However, "ZUN" is used on the book' cover so please change that back as well if you deem necessary. - Marchjuly (talk) 05:36, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Marchjuly:Thank you for your cleanups of the article! --DawnDusk (talk) 05:49, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Sorry again for screwing up the names. If you have done so already, you should ask for advice at WT:ANIME. The editors in that WikiProject should be able to provide lots of good suggestions. - Marchjuly (talk) 05:52, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Unless the names are acronyms or initials, they should be rendered as Dio and Zun at all times per MOS:ALLCAPS. —Farix (t | c) 11:08, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That section doesn't have anything on proper names that happen to be all-capitalized, though. --DawnDusk (talk) 16:37, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@TheFarix: I do agree that the article would look better using "Dio" unless it's specifically referring to his name change, though. --DawnDusk (talk) 16:39, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox image

[edit]

Dio's infobox image is actually somebody else's fan art. 205.155.154.122 (talk) 17:25, 27 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The image is being used as a non-free image and appears to satisfy all 10 of the non-free use critria listed in WP:NFCCP. A seperate, specific non-free use rationale for use in this article can be found on the file's description page so it seems to be OK to use in this article in my opinion even if it was created by someone else. Which specific Wikipedia policy are you citing that states the image should not be used? It would be helpful to know so that this can be further discussed. Thanks in advance. - Marchjuly (talk) 20:29, 27 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not aware of Wikipedia's policies, but I'm pretty sure the infobox image is fanart and not something from Jump Ultimate Stars (doesn't that game uses still images that are directly from the mangas that are represented in the game).205.155.154.122 (talk) 20:25, 18 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure whether being "fanart" is relevant if the file is being licensed as non-free use, but I will ask about it at Wikipedia's non-free content review. -Marchjuly (talk) 06:18, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think that's the issue the IP editor is talking about - it's about whether the image is a good representation of the article subject. Personally, I'd prefer if an image from the manga was used. --IDVtalk 06:38, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the input IDV. If 205.155.154.122 or another editor can find an image that is better, and it can be used on Wikipedia then that's fine with me. I actually know nothing about the manga other than what is written in this article, and was only commenting on whether use of the image was acceptable per Wikipedia policy. - Marchjuly (talk) 06:47, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I was actually stating if it would right to use this image for the infobox without properly acknowledging who created the fanart. Because isn't it a violation if you don't credit the person who created the piece of fanart.205.155.154.122 (talk) 18:56, 20 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This is the image that is actually from Jump Ultimate Stars. http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/jjba/images/3/3e/Dio_Jump_Ultimate_Stars.png/revision/latest?cb=20130929091421 50.156.82.190 (talk) 02:17, 24 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox voice actors

[edit]

@ZeEnergizer:You've single handedly made the infobox massive by inserting the information that previously had its own section into the infobox. See other examples of how infoboxes should be like Vegeta or Goku. --DawnDusk (talk) 15:25, 30 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Image and Name Reference

[edit]

You guys are right about the image.

The name is a reference to the Italian reference to God, as Araki himself stated in the reference. --140.32.16.3 (talk) 05:57, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Bringing up the all-caps debate again...

[edit]

Shouldn't there be some indication that Dio's name is rendered in all-caps from Part 3 onward? I'm not saying to put "DIO" in every single mention for Part 3 and beyond, just in the cases with specific reference to his re-christening under the mononym of "DIO". I mean, "the newly dubbed 'Dio'" doesn't make much sense without the all caps. For some precedence, Crunchyroll's English release of the Stardust Crusaders anime uses "DIO" in the subtitles, episode descriptions, and episode titles (ie, "DIO's World").[1] Metamoss (talk) 09:48, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's fair to mention that it's written in all caps in the manga, but we shouldn't use it ourselves when just referring to him.--Alexandra IDVtalk 10:10, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
To elaborate on this now that I'm not on mobile, we shouldn't write Dio in all-caps because of MOS:TMRULES.--Alexandra IDVtalk 11:45, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm a bit lost here, if you'll excuse my inquiring. So, are you saying that the rendering of "DIO" in all caps should not used be in the article at all, due to MOS:TMRULES? I understand where that rule is coming from, and I'm fine with the article continuing to use "Dio" as the preferred name for referring to him (including for Part 3 and later), but could we at least change the lines "where he is now known as solely Dio" and "the newly dubbed 'Dio'", maybe with a specific note to the all-caps rendering? With how the "DIO" rendering is handled in JoJo media, including the English releases, I think it's fair to say that there's some significance in the change from "Dio" to "DIO", and that it's worth noting this change here. Metamoss (talk) 19:13, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry if I'm being unclear. I mean that we can say that Dio's name is rendered as "DIO" within Stardust Crusaders, but when just mentioning the character we would write it as "Dio".--Alexandra IDVtalk 12:49, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for clarifying! I think we're on the same page here, so I'm just gonna go make the edit I was thinking of doing. Metamoss (talk) 17:42, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Why does this page exist?

[edit]

Why does Dio get his own page while literally all of the other character pages for Jojo's redirect to their respective section of their part? Either the Dio Brando page should redirect to his section of the Phantom Blood page, or, since part 1 Dio and part 3 Dio could be considered separate characters, have Dio Brando redirect to his part of the Phantom Blood page, and have DIO (all caps or just "Dio") redirect to his part of the Stardust Crusaders page, or every major character should get the treatment Dio is getting. Either way, there has to be a change. If anybody could argue for this character page, and only this character page to exist. I would be willing to drop the topic entirely. Tooadman (talk) 15:37, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Tooadman:I had a similar conversation regarding Spider-Man (Insomniac Games) and honestly users will not budge no matter what you say. But you cannot argue a page for all major Jojo characters just because one exists, per the Other stuff exists rule. DIO is iconic to the entire Jojo franchise and all anime & manga, due to his influence and relevance in it he deserves his own page. In addition he is relevant to western media as current comics like Hulk and certain TV shows reference Dio specifically. Possibly Jotaro and Joseph Joestar deserve their own page as well, for similar reasons. Feel free to make them if you wish.
Also Dio and DIO are absolutely the same character. This is like trying to claim Batman and Bruce Wayne are different. 2604:2000:1107:A0DA:2869:A9D4:8FFB:3828 (talk) 19:00, 5 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This page was created through Wikipedia's WP:Articles for Creation process, passing all tests. It exists because there exist numerous accredited sources on Dio. Whether or not other JoJo characters have pages is entirely irrelevant. If you didn't want this page to exist, you should have challenged it when it was in AfC. --DawnDusk (talk) 02:00, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Petition to protect this page

[edit]

Too many Jojo fans are vandalizing this page and adding meaningless things. 2604:2000:1107:A0DA:2869:A9D4:8FFB:3828 (talk) 19:12, 5 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Requests are made at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection.Tintor2 (talk) 19:18, 5 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Also, we don't need to protect some random page about a manga character just because one person is changing the name. Just get someone to stop the kid that's doing it. It's not like we have an "anonymous hacker in our database", he left his IP address and a signature. Toadman (Tooadman) (talk) 06:51, 10 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If there are constant inconstructive edits by random anons, a request to block sounds reasonable. If it's just one person, then first they should be warned and if he continues, then he should be blocked.Tintor2 (talk) 16:03, 10 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. The vandalism at the moment is manageable, and page protection might slow changes of an already slightly contentious article. MagPlex (talk) 16:46, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Jojolion section

The section for Jojolion just says “Dio”. Is this an issue for anyone else? I can’t see this being useful information. DoodleZoo (talk) 17:35, 21 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
