Des'ree on SNL

[edit]

Does anyone remember seeing the SNL parody of "You Gotta Be"? It was performed by an actress pretending to be OJ Simpson's first wife and included lines such as "You gotta be quick, you gotta play dead, you gotta hide in the closet; You gotta be smart, you gotta think fast, you gotta learn to fight like a ninja..."

I keep trying to find the video clip. For some reason, this struck me as particularly funny. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 205.200.57.235 (talk) 20:54, 11 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Clean-up

[edit]

I didn't do any fact-checking, but I cleaned this up grammatically. It could still use some better organization, I think, but at least it's more wikified and reads less like an album cover. --130.63.128.59 00:06, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've pruned it down to the facts, listing songs used for films should go on the songs own pages, and not the artists. Darrenhusted 10:51, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Des'ree also sued Janet Jackson due to similarities between "Got 'Til It's Gone" and "Feel So High" (Des'ree won). I cannot find a source for this so I have not added it. — AnemoneProjectors (会話) 21:17, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Are the Jacksons worth suing any more?;-) Scruffy brit (talk) 07:13, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Beyonce dispute is stated much differently on the song's page. (https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Kissing_You_%28Des%27ree_song%29#Beyoncé_lawsuit) than in his article. Seems to be less about covering without permission, but rather a title change without permission. In the USA, there's the compulsory cover licence, which allows anyone to cover your musical work (once initially made public) without issue as long as they pay the necessary fees and do not contravene the morality clause. Can someone edit the wording on this biographical page?

Active

[edit]

In the info part, it says Years Active was 1993 to PRESENT. However, as her last release was in 2003, and she has not released any music since then, nor has an active music website, I think it is fair to say that she is no longer active. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.134.11.128 (talk) 10:56, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Release of music is not the only way to be active in music. I think there are many singers and bands which only do concerts. Though there is not much about her performances: tours in 1992 and 1995, plus one (?) concert in 1999.
Is there any info what she's been doing since? Is she a photographer, she has at least studied it? 85.76.13.4 (talk) 04:20, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation

[edit]

I notice the long 'i' pronunciation with no source cited. As far as I know it's as the name would be pronounced, like "ray", so: /dɛs'reɪ/. Maybe we can find some sources to back this up. (Sbutler (talk) 09:37, 13 July 2015 (UTC))[reply]

I have heard it pronounced both ways; perhaps the most authoritative source (if one is available) would be a video or audio file of Des'ree introducing herself (e.g. on a TV or radio show). I had a quick look on youtube, and there doesn't seem to be a video there like this. And either way, it should be a /z/, not a /s/, used in the phonetic spelling of her name.Nqr9 (talk) 02:55, 14 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
