So how much has Dali changed in these 13 years since 99...Back then it was the most gorgeous city besides lijiang and Yangshou that I had been to in China..Old buildings, unique minority style of dressing, lots of Mao suits...It was beautiful...Anyone able to give me an update on how the city has changed for the article and also myself? Maybe we could do a Dali then and Dali now section with the pictures if someone had more recent pictures of the city or old town.. Dounai (talk) 18:22, 4 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Tapin-tze

[edit]

The locality "Tapin-tze" is mentioned in the botanical literature and was apparently the collection site "near Lake Tali" for numerous specimens by Delavay in the 1800's. I have been unable to find coordinates or a modern name for this location but I assume it is somewhere near Dali. 98.204.156.195 (talk) 13:44, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I'd spitball Dapinzi but how "near" are we talking? A hamlet somewhere around the lake? or some village somewhere closer to "Tali" than "Yunnanfoo"? — LlywelynII 23:20, 24 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
and Google says... some village somewhere in southern China. The Plants of China, p. 217: "Delavay returned to China in 1882, basing himself in Wenshan (then known as Tapintze) from..." Can't vouch for the writer's accuracy, though. One paper has "Tapintze (大坪子?)" which is a village in Huize County, NE Yunnan, or in Leibo County, SW Sichuan. — LlywelynII 23:49, 24 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Reorganize

[edit]

Well, this is unfortunate. The WP:PRIMARYTOPIC of "Dali" in English is Salvador. Someone did the appropriate thing and WP:NATURALLYDISAMBIGUATED the Chinese place as Dali, Yunnan. Then, some well-meaning editor mucked that up by moving it here. It needs to go back: the WP:ENGLISH WP:COMMONNAME of the place is "Dali", not "Dali City". In fact, "Dali City" is an entirely different WP:SCOPE from "Dali" since—in English and Chinese—someone talking about their trip to Dali is talking about the old town, not Xiaguan. "Dali City" is not a city at all but the county administration of Dali's hinterland, which is centered on Xiaguan.

  • Most of this article should be MOVEd back to Dali, Yunnan, and focused entirely on the old town and its history, as that is the PRIMARYTOPIC of people discussing Dali, Yunnan; Dali, China; &c.
  • The transportation, economy, &c. could stay here and deal with the entire area
  • Xiaguan, Dali City should be MERGEd back here as it is the seat (and actual city) of Dali County-Level-"City". It is the "Dali" of any transportation to Dali and is only called "Xiaguan" locally and by tourists who are pointedly distinguishing it from what they're talking about when they say "Dali" (i.e., the old town).

In the alternative, the page should be MOVEd to Dali County, Yunnan. Its an uncommon way to render 市 but is needed to clarify what is being discussed here: a 县级市. (Just saying "county-level city" creates enough cognitive dissonance that it's less helpful than opting for one or the other. This page chose the wrong way to go here.) — LlywelynII 23:27, 24 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I perused this page in the course of independent research on a battle in Ta-li or Dali, which took place January 15th, 1873. I have experience with pages guarded by zealots, and shall therefore decline to add this fact gleaned from a book written in 1894 by Morrison, a traveling Australian doctor. The book is in the public domain and the text is electronic, on the web and unlikely to disappear. translator (talk) 01:08, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
