Funding?
[edit]With authorization as a federal transportation project, substantial federal funding is expected to become available for planning a Cross-Harbor Rail Tunnel. However, questions remain as to whether the benefits can be enough to justify the high costs. As of spring, 2006, it appears that New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg does not support the project.

Jersey City is Central Jersey???!
[edit]I think the characterization of the Cross-Harbor rail tunnel's new jersey origin being "central jersey" is completely wrong. First of all, it is on the hudson river, the coast of new jersey - which is a unique region of new jersey. further south, it is referred to as "the shore." Second, central jersey is a region south of the new york metropolitan area. Central jersey can be safely said to be a region that buffers between populations that commute to new york city: North Jersey, seriously high; and South Jersey, extremely low. Jersey City is definately in North Jersey. I'm sorry that this post is grammatically (sp?) abhorrent, but i was just thinking with my fingers. pardon me.
- The tunnel would provide access to Central Jersey via the existing rail lines. I believe a good connection to most of North Jersey would require a new line. --SPUI (T - C) 00:07, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
Highway project
[edit]The highway project is a reaction to the rail project, initially from trucking companies that feared they might lose business and more recently from Brooklyn and Queens residents who are gradually coming to understrand what a 100-fold increase in rail traffic might mean for their neighborhoods. The rail project has the advantage of more than 12 years of preparation and more than $20 million in government investment. The highway project has no such advantage and is based on the observation that a highway tunnel would be shorter than the proposed rail tunnel and would connect existing high-traffic roadways.
