Grammar and accuracy
[edit]This article appears to have been written almost entirely by children - illiterate children at that. Frankly, it needs a complete re-write, but as I never like Teignmouth I really can't be arsed. There are also some rather dubious statements that have little supportive evidence and ought perhaps to be removed. Those responsible should know which they are. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Spolky (talk • contribs) 01:15, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Pronounciation
[edit]An anon IP changed the pronounciation for the town. Can someone verify the pronounciation? Andjam 12:40, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
I can indeed, having been brought up there.Dutchdavey 12:13, 20 June 2006 (CEDST)
I dont know that Charles Babbage was a churchwarden - according to Wikipedia, that was his father.Dutchdavey 12:13, 20 June 2006 (CEDST)
As a Teignmouth resident, I can confirm that it is pronounced Tinmouth
- isn't it more like tin-mirth rather than tin-mouth?
I would agree as a Tin-mirth born and bred.Rosser 20:24, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
I corrected my mistake about the 'churchwarden' - thanks. Rosser 20:38, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
- We now have the pronunciation as tin-mooth. I'll change it, but please confirm I've not made a mistake. kwami (talk) 09:50, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Its tin-muth. We can discuss the tin, but the muth is just like the muth in Exemuth,Plymuth,Portsmuth,Great Yarmuth etc,etc..Dutchdavey (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 15:10, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Can't we have both? It took a lot of time getting those prints out of their frames and scanning them in :-) Rosser 20:29, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
As another Teignmouth resident I can also confirm it is pronounced "Tin" but the river is the "Teen" this is where the confusion may be —Preceding unsigned comment added by Teign8 (talk • contribs) 19:33, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
Reorganise article
[edit]I think the section layout of this article could do with improvement. The History section is far too short: for a start it could be expanded to include as sub-headings all the entries under Transport. A new section on Buildings could include the details of Saint James's church, and I'm sure the town has several other buildings of note (Cherry & Pevsner's Devon has 7 pages on the town). Then maybe a new section on Famous people could include several of the entries presently under Miscellany. And, well, basically I'd like to reorganise the whole thing... Any thoughts? —SMALLJIM 16:51, 22 November 2007 (UTC)
- Be bold! There's probably a good History of Teignmouth book floating around that area - do you live near Teignmouth? If not, I'll try by cupboard-sized library. Totnesmartin (talk) 22:21, 22 November 2007 (UTC)
- OK I'm being bold! I thought it polite to ask first before making such extensive changes, especially as others (Rosser1954 particularly) have already done so much work on the article. Anyway I've started so I hope to finish... I have a copy of H.J. Trump's Teignmouth (1986), so I'll be plundering that for some facts to add. The article certainly needs some more text to spread all the images out a bit :) —SMALLJIM 11:18, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
Trivia
[edit]Since being bold is in fashion, I added this section with Norman Wisdoms Press for Time. Maybe I should have cleared it here first. Sorry!
Having said that Press for time, is probably one of the few places where you can see footage of the town as it was 40 years ago and IMHHHHHO, deserves a mention if only because, if you know the place, it's such a delight to watch.
Dutchdavey (talk) 09:01, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for adding that. I've moved it and deleted the Trivia section, because I understand such sections are deprecated at present. I look forward to seeing the film on TV some day! —SMALLJIM 10:34, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
I changed the film clip, since the one I put in has been removed. The new one shows the bus and bicycle chase with all sorts of shots of the town and surrounding countryside. Dutchdavey (talk) 16:00, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
Roman bridge?
[edit]I've removed this text because I can find no reference for it:
- The bridge is of Roman origin and when the present bridge was constructed some of the Roman wood was used to make a table which was kept at Lindridge House. It was destroyed in the fire that destroyed the house just as its conversion into a hotel was nearing completion in the 1960's.
I don't think the Romans could have built such a long bridge without it being famous, and there's no evidence the Romans were here anyway, AFAIK. Local legend? It should, of course, be added back if anyone can reference it. —SMALLJIM 10:34, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
- There was a Roman coin hoard found at Stoneycombe (where that quarry is by the railway line between Totnes and Newton Abbot), according to an OS map I used to have. So there was some Roman activity south of the Teign - but bridges? What for, there was nothing south of Teignmouth worth building a bridge to. Perhaps the writer meant "Norman". Totnesmartin (talk) 11:35, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
- I should have said "there", not "here": I temporarily forgot we have other local editors :-) But, yes there was some Roman activity in South Devon, and there is unreliable 19th C. evidence that Teign Bridge (near Teigngrace) has a Roman foundation. Did they start south of Exeter just before they got recalled to fight in Wales? I forget. —SMALLJIM 12:22, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
- Isca Dumnoniorum says that the Seciond Legion occupied Isca (which, incidentally, is cognate with "whisky"!) from 50-75 AD, when they did indeed leave for Wales, leaving Isca as a civilian town. The coin hoard probably dates from the late 2nd century, when there was a lot of coin-hoarding going on (according to Roman Britain). But I can find no evidence of major roads or bridges south of Exeter - despite Harper's Hill in Totnes being called "the Roman Road" locally. Totnesmartin (talk) 13:25, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for refreshing my memory. There were no major roads, certainly, but the long extract from Magna Britannia here is interesting - the source of that dubious 19th C evidence. And in the 1950s a Roman road was excavated on Haldon, as reported in the 1954 issue of Rep. & Trans. of the Devonshire Association. IIRC that same article expands upon the supposed Roman origin of Teign Bridge. I think the evidence needs re-examining: maybe I should write to Time Team! But, to keep nominally on topic, nothing near Teignmouth. —SMALLJIM 14:56, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

The bridge, part II
[edit]Hi Rosser1954. Regarding your Shaldon Bridge addition[1] I think that M. Jusserand is confusing you with his mention of Teignmouth. I found a copy of his book here and it's apparent that he's not talking about Shaldon Bridge, but Teign Bridge near Teigngrace - the same bridge that Totnesmartin and I were talking about last month (see above). If you're in any doubt, see the extract from Magna Brittania that I referred to above: most of the details that Jusserand mentions are repeated there (last para of the Roman Antiquities section) - the date is a clincher and there's even a link to P. J.[sic] Taylor's original paper. Do you agree - will you remove the text? It would fit nicely into the River Teign article instead.
Regarding the other bit that you added, about the table[2], what's the source for that? There's no mention on this web page and Pevsner doesn't say anything about it, but it does sound plausible and it's an interesting little snippet of info. Best wishes —SMALLJIM 17:18, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
- Per Rosser's comment on my talk page,[3] I've moved the paragraph to River Teign. —SMALLJIM 18:17, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
Sea-Facing Beach
[edit]Is this a joke, like road-facing bus stop or pitch-facing goal posts?
Can someone remove sea-facing?
Dutchdavey (talk) 09:43, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
- Haha! Well you can remove it if you don't like it. It does sound odd, but then I guess that Teignmouth is one of the select few resorts with both east-facing (sea) and west-facing (estuary) beaches, isn't it? Actually the whole Tourism section needs beefing up - something about the change from week-long holidays to short breaks, the decline of the hotels etc. There's bound to be some sources for that sort of info. —SMALLJIM 14:00, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
- I guess I could go with any consensus on it. Its wonderfully eccentric - Dutchdavey (talk) 14:52, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
Sea-facing - yes I like the logic. The Harbour-facing side is more interesting. Good pubs, fishing boats, etc. Are the bottles of odd trawling finds still there and the gumboot flowerpots? Rosser (talk) 22:53, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
Geography
[edit]I've added a sub category of Climate with Weather averages for Teignmouth (1971-2000 averages from the Met Office). http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/averages/19712000/sites/teignmouth.html Bsrboy 20:15, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
- Do you have any proof that 75% of Teignmouth's population are pensioners? Jolly Ω Janner 17:47, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

Parliamentary consituency
[edit]The infobox says that the UK parliamentary constituency is Teignbridge (UK Parliament constituency). But the latter article claims that this constituency no longer exists. Could someone who knows about this please check and amend as necessary? Thanks. Feline Hymnic (talk) 21:02, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
