Umaga has Chinese ancestry?

[edit]

I've never seen this mentioned in the media, and the only source provided is an op-ed. Does anyone have a news article, interview or official biography that confirms he has Chinese ancestry? --Muchness 15:12, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to be a common conjecture among some Chinese NZers. However Umaga reportedly can't confirm it (or rule it out):
'... the word from the All Black camp is that the skipper is "unsure of where - if any - Chinese ancestry comes in the family tree". They go on to say that there might be some Chinese blood among his grand parents or great grand parents but Tana has no details.' Asia:NZ media newsletter, Sept 2005
So our article shouldn't claim that he is. You're right to have deleted it. -- Avenue 00:17, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tana may be unsure, but I have it on good authority from two of his elders who are both well-respected within the community - Reverend Mua Strickson-Pua and Sam Sefuiva at Race Relations/The Human Rights Commission - that he and his family do have Chinese ancestry. The Reverend declared this publicly in his 'Multiple Identities' address at the 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Banana' Chinese Identity conference of 2005. Students in Wellington

[edit]

The contributions of Strawberryphoebe seem to have been written by a Chinese student in Wellington crying out for recognition and have no place in an article on Chinese New Zealanders because what is said is either trivial, unverifiable or a naive protest against the establishment, and as a contribution is just not up to standard. I reverted the contribution to restore the article but Queen Rhana for some reason thinks my effort is vandalism and reverted it. Why?Syoungnz (talk) 20:05, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You did not give a reason why you deleted the whole section without giving a reason in the edit summary. Next time, please do so, to avoid confusion in the future. ~Rhana~{♦} talk page 20:15, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Merger

[edit]

I concur with the page merger and unless I receive objections I will merge Chinese immigration to New Zealand into this article. Please let me know V. Joe (talk) 15:16, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment comment

[edit]

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Chinese New Zealanders/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

Is not based on the results of the latest New Zealand Census (2006). The stats are therefore significantly out of date, given the rather dynamic growth-rate of the Chinese population of New Zealand.
