- For climate-related stuff de:Chennai has some good images. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 08:26, August 1, 2005 (UTC)
- The temperature chaet seems incorrect. It appears that temps have dipped to 6°C which I find is highly unlikely. =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:24, August 2, 2005 (UTC)
Infobox queries
- Does the municipal corporation of Chennai limits extend over Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur districts? -- =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:33, August 2, 2005 (UTC)
- I don't think so. This corporation page in Tamil has residential addresses of all councilors, none of which is outside of Chennai district. I'm not 100% sure, though. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 04:37, August 3, 2005 (UTC)
- To confirm what Sundar's written, nope, it does not. Areas within the Chennai Metropolitan region that happen to lie in Kanchipuram or Thiruvallur district are usually under a Municipality or a Panchayat (e.g. Alandur Municipality, Ullagarm Panchayat). Ambarish 06:00, 3 August 2005 (UTC)
- What is an acting mayor supposed to be? -- =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:33, August 2, 2005 (UTC)
- Politics, in one word. The details are as follows. M.K. Stalin (son of M Karunanidhi) was reelected as the Mayor of Chennai in 2001 ([1]). However, the ruling AIADMK enacted a law in June 2002 that bars the same person from holding two public positions simultaneously. This law was applied retrospectively to Stalin's case (he was both an MLA of TN Legislative Assembly and the Mayor at that time). So he was removed from the position of Mayor on June 21, 2002[2]. The deputy Mayor Karate R. Thiagarajan (an AIADMK member) was subsequently posted as "acting Mayor"). I vaguely remember someone challenging this in the Madras High Court. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 04:20, August 3, 2005 (UTC)
Anon reverts
Hi 221.128.166.xxx. Please do not revert to older versions. The curremt version is molded to the Featured article requirements. You are invited to expand the section. The older version had many statements which were repeated over several times over. =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:13, August 4, 2005 (UTC)
City Name
Surely the name of this city, in English, is Madras. What it is called in Tamil or Hindi or Norwegian cannot change its English name. Given that this version of the encyclopaedia is in English should it not be headed MADRAS? Avalon 12:46, 5 August 2005 (UTC)
- No the name has been changed to Chennai in English too. It is officially Chennai. Just like Peking was changed to Beijing =Nichalp «Talk»= 14:55, August 5, 2005 (UTC)
With respect, that is an impossible assertion. English can evolve slowly. It cannot be changed by government edict. If the government of New Zealand were to declare that "dog" was now "aardvark" that would not change the English word "dog". It might make some or all New Zealanders adopt the change but could do nothing outside that government's control. Avalon 22:04, 5 August 2005 (UTC)
- It could have been changed to Chennai in English, but the international world has not yet changed. Here is a recent BBC News article which uses Madras, not Chennai. Even Chennaiites use Madras very frequently, Madras Veyyil, Madras Bashai, etc. - BNitin 155.69.5.234
- We know that. The fact that the name is legally Chennai means we have to reflect the current name. If we have Madras as the article title it would be factually inaccurate. All other encyclopedias have used the new name. If you are using Windows, just check the timezones and you'll see the Chennai NOT Madras. We had a huge vote earlier Calcutta vs Kolkata and Kolkata won, so the article title is not going to be changed in the future. =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:03, August 6, 2005 (UTC)
- This is an interesting discussion. One has to remember that English is widely used as an official language in India and the change of name is for the way the name is spelt in official records in English in India. English speakers in other countries are free to use the name Madras. Wikipedia recommends that American English be used in U.S related articles and British English for U.K related articles. This is an India related article, so the name of the city in Indian English,--so to speak-- 'Chennai' ought to be used here as the title of the article. Having said that, there is no doubt that Madras is still popularly used by the people of the city, and many prefer to use the name Madras than Chennai. - Srini81 07:10, 6 August 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, Chennai is official; I agree. The article should be called either "Chennai" or "Chennai (Madras)". and NOT "Madras". That said, Kolkata is the way the locals refer to Calcutta; Bangalore is the anglicized version of Bengaluru. But, Madras is NOT the anglicized version of Chennai - it's a different name altogether. You can't say Chennai is Indian English and Madras is not. It might, however, be acceptable to say Mumbai is Indian English and Bombay is not. So we can't really draw parallels to Kolkata or Mumbai in this case.
- We will have to consider the continuing popularity of the name Madras. We're still internationally Chennai(Madras) and not merely Chennai. CIA Factbook. Plus, some airlines still welcome you to Madras! This should be driven down to the readers of the article. The article presently uses Chennai almost exclusively.
- -BNitin
- Yes. That's why the continuing popularity of the old name is mentioned in the article. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 04:16, August 8, 2005 (UTC)
- There's no point arguing when the name is certainly not going to be changed. Please browse through Talk:Kolkata/archive2 for the big debate on Calcutta vs Kolkata. =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:27, August 6, 2005 (UTC)
Well, I am saddened by the bellicose tone of Nichalp, his aggressive stance casts doubt on the authority of the article itself. Avalon 02:29, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
- I'm sorry if the tone of my replies seemed bellicose, but there's nothing that can be done to change the name to Madras, and I guess all opponents to the name Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai (that includes me too) have to accept the new official name to keep this encyclopedia within the times. Ofcourse they are free to use whatever name they choose to call it, but this is an encyclopedia and should not be misleading, inaccurate and stale. =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:54, August 7, 2005 (UTC)
Madras dismbig/redirect
Madras leads to a disambiguation page and when 'what links here' link on that page is clicked, one may find that almost all refer to Chennai. Also, there are plenty of instances of Madras being piped to Chennai in various articles and other uses of the name are pretty scarce. Shouldn't Madras redirect to Chennai and a note be put up linking to a seperate disambig page - something in the lines of Napoleon? - Srini81 08:52, 7 August 2005 (UTC)

Mahindra world city
Mahindra World City is not the World's Largest IT campus, it might house one. The article Mahindra World City says Infosys will set it up at MWC. If I am not wrong, MWC is the largest international collaboration (Indian & Singaporean companies; the land area and investment are the largest, I suppose). - Bnitin 20:38, 8 August 2005 (UTC)

Better Picture of Tidel Park?
The current one looks very blurred. I hope it is ok if I replace it with one of mine. However I am no photographer, if anyone has a really good picture feel free to use that instead.Jbritto
- Your picture looks better. You can upload more of your own pictures to commons if you wish and discuss it here. Thanks. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 11:15, August 9, 2005 (UTC)
Chennai history
An objection has been raised that the listory section lacks information between 1968 and 2004. I can't find any info during this period. Please add a few notable events. =Nichalp «Talk»= 17:36, August 9, 2005 (UTC)
- Done (I hope!). Added the language agitation of the 1960s, and two events connected with the Sri Lankan ethnic conflict. Please check my addition for unconscious POV (it's quite possible, especially with my choice of words). -- Brhaspati\talk/contribs 04:14, August 10, 2005 (UTC)
- On August 8, 1993, a bomb exploded in the RSS office at Chetput, Chennai, killing 11 persons. - Perhaps we can add this info. But, I'm afraid the events that we add under the history section might unfairly create an impression of bad law and order in Chennai. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 05:49, August 10, 2005 (UTC)
- I've tried to address the objection on the FAC page that not enough post-1970s stuff has been mentioned in the article. Just in case that doesn't hold, here are some things that can possibly be mentioned:
TN MLAs fighting each other in the Assembly (1989-1991)- Rajiv Gandhi assassination 1991? (Can't really call it Chennai, can we?)
- RSS bomb blast in 1993.
- Sarika Shah case 1998.
- Kannagi Statue controversy 2001. (I'm really scraping the bottom of the barrel here for notable stuff).
Add any others to the list. -- Brhaspati\talk/contribs 02:59, August 11, 2005 (UTC)
- None of the online sites have any info post the renaming of Tamil Nadu. I don't know much abuot the city's history, but the above events are not notable enought to mention on this page. =Nichalp «Talk»= 05:15, August 11, 2005 (UTC)
- 1943 Japanese Fighter Plane dropped bombs on City and disappeared.
Validating the trial edit
Brhaspati, the recent edit merging the present problems with the rest of the article is very good. All these days, I knew that it doesn't look good to have a "present problems" section in an encyclopedia article, but didn't know what can be done. Thanks to someone's suggestion at FAC and your edits, it looks much better now. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 04:09, August 10, 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks! I remember I had put in that section because the rest of the article at that time didn't have appropriate sections for this to fit into (like Demographics, which didn't exist at the time). But yes, the article does seem to flow better now. -- Brhaspati\talk/contribs 04:21, August 10, 2005 (UTC)
Quotes
Know any quotes on Madras/Chennai to add it to wikiquote? =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:22, August 10, 2005 (UTC)
Sun TV n K TV are d most popular channels in chennai. The article on Sun TV says its the most popular in India TRP wise, n I rem seein a news article in Economic Times a few yrs bak. There is much greater recognition for them than fr Sun Network. So, it is wiser to mention Sun TV and K TV instead of Sun Network. - Ram
Aerials of Chennai
Had taken some snaps while coming here recently. Had some problems uploading it here. I've put them at [3]. I think it's the Adyar river. If there's any image worth taking, then I'll upload them onto Commons. - Bnitin 20:39, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
I checked the images again, and the page works well for me. The images are heavy, each one 4 Megapixel. You'll have to wait for them to load. I'm baffled why I am not able to upload it onto Wikipedia/Wikimedia. - Bnitin 19:08, 13 August 2005 (UTC)
- Do one thing. Resize them to around 1000px in width and upload. Maxfile size is 20MB. (I hope the images are jpeg?) There's a special software created for windows which auto uploads the images. Just check out the main page of wikipedia commons:. Note: To upload, you'll need to have an account and be logged in. =Nichalp «Talk»= 19:13, August 13, 2005 (UTC)
I'm logged in. When I try to upload a file, the page just times out, or I end up seeing a blank page in the end. I'm on a broadband, so the speed shouldn't be a concern; such a problem has never happened when I uploaded before. Unfortunately, this isn't my computer and it doesn't have any s/w to resize it. Are u able to view the images on the page I gave? - Bnitin 19:19, 13 August 2005 (UTC)
- If you're using windows, Irfanview is a nice package you can download to resize the images. No, I still can't see the images. =Nichalp «Talk»= 00:48, August 14, 2005 (UTC)
Talukas
Please take care of this statement from the article (note numbering and text). For administrative purposes Chennai is divided into three talukas. 1) Egmore-Nungambakam 2) Fort Tondiarpet 3) Mambalam-Guindy 5) Mylapore-Triplicane. -- Brhaspati\talk/contribs 23:01, August 12, 2005 (UTC)
