I'm adding some of his other names from the Chinese version of this page. I'd also like to note that some of this article is extremely muddled. I don't know enough about Chen Tuan and his practices to make much sense of it. I'm referring especially to this part:

...with a method of chi (energy) cultivation known today as Taiji ruler, sleeping meditation, a 24 Daoyin Qigong Method (er shi shi ssu shih tao yin fa) seated and standing exercises designed to prevent diseases that occur during seasonal change.

If you know more than I, please edit! Otherwise, I may consult the Chinese version to see if I can untangle the mess.

It is said that when Chen Tuan was young, he loved to study the classic Hundred Family Surnames. Once he had read it, he never forgot it, thereby gaining a name for himself. He did not do well on the Imperial Examination, so he traveled to Mingshan in Sichuan Province and lived there in seclusion. There he asked the spirits to meet and speak with him. He secluded himself for a long time on the mountains of Wudangshan, Huashan, and Shaohuashan. According to The History of the Song: Biography of Chen Tuan, the Taoist deity Lü Dongbin visited him and taught several times. Another Taoish deity named Tan Qiao also was his teacher. Emperor Shizong of Later Zhou bestowed on Chen Tuan the name "White Cloud Master" (白雲先生), and Emperor Taizong of Song called him "Rare Barbarian Master". He died in 989 CE on Lotus Peak (Huālián Fēng 蓮花峰), the tallest peak on Huangshan in Anhui Province.

This is what I've translated so far. Some parts of it are in poetry, which is quite difficult to translate, so I'm going to leave it as it is for now. Maybe I'll try to figure that part out later, but it might be better just to give the gist of it rather than translate the poems word-for-word. Linguixperiments (talk) 05:17, 20 March 2009 (UTC) I've translated more:[reply]

During the period called "Great Peace and National Revitalization" (太平興國) from 976 CE to 984 CE, Emperor Taizong of Song commanded Chen Tuan to come to the Song capital of Bianjing (汴京). The emperor himself wrote a poem called "Commanding Chen Tuan, the Gentleman who Resides on Huashan" (詔華山處士陳摶).

(I did not translate the poem. That is far beyond my abilities. If anyone else wants to try:

「華岳多聞說,知君是姓陳,雲間三島客,物外一閒人;丹鼎為活計,青山作近鄰,朕思親欲往,社稷去無因」

The emperor also wrote another poem called "Bestowing on Chen Tuan"

The emperor's diplomat Ge Shouzhong (葛守忠) also wrote a poem called, "Answering/Agreeing with Chen Tuan" (答陳摶)

In response, Chen Tuan wrote a poem called, "Answering the Envoy but Declining to Go and Follow the Order" (答使者辭不赴詔)

After these entreaties, Chen Tuan had no choice but to give in and go to the capital Bianjing. When he came to Bianjing, the emperor treated him very well. While Chen Tuan was there, the prime minister asked him, "先生得玄默修養之道可以教人乎?" Chen Tuan's sense of the I Ching (Yì Jīng 易经) had a fairly significant effect on philosophy during the Song Dynasty. His ideas were passed on to Zhou Dunyi, a Neo-Confucian philosopher and cosmologist, and also to Shao Yong, a Chinese philosopher, cosmologist, poet and historian. Both of these philosophers lived during the Song Dynasty. Chen Tuan's ideas had a great effect on the study of the I Ching. The Yin-Yang symbol ("Diagram of Taichi" 太极图/太極圖) had its origin in Chen Tuan. Originally, Yin-Yang symbol was called "Without Poles Diagram" 无极图/無極圖. This idea was later passed onto Zhou Dunyi. "Aged Ancestor Chen Tuan" (陳摶老祖 Chén Tuán Lǎozǔ) and "Ancestral Teacher Xiyi" (希夷祖師 Xīyí Zǔshī) Linguixperiments (talk) 00:34, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It would be really cool if someone could incorporate this kind of name template into the article:

Chinese:
Pinyin: Chén Tuán

Chen Tuan & Alchemy

[edit]

Was Chen Tuan an alchemist?

from net https://waterspirit6x8.tripod.com/id74.html

"An interesting lineage: Hidden Immortal; by teacher Wu Zhong-xian

Hidden Immortal Lineage " It is said that Xi Wang Mu 西王母 (Queen Mother of the West) of Kun Lun 崐崘 Mountain was the first person to start teaching Qi cultivation techniques to help others become immortals. In the Daoist tradition, she is is addressed as Jin Guang Xuan Mu 金光玄母 (Golden Light Mystical Mother). Historically, the next important teacher of shamanism and Daoism is Xuan Yuan 軒轅, otherwise known as the Yellow Emperor. He passed down secret cultivation techniques of immortality after he became immortal. More than 2,000 years after the Yellow Emperor, another very important teacher appeared in the Zhou dynasty (1027–256 BCE). This was Laozi 老子, whom we also call Tai Shang Lao Jun 太上老君 (the Most High Lord Lao). Although many people benefited from Laozi’s teachings, two stand out:

Shao Yang Zu Shi 少陽祖師 (whose original name was Wang XuanFu 王玄甫) and Wen Shi Zhen Ren 文始真人 (whose original name was Yin Xi 尹喜).

These masters started two immortal cultivation teaching lineages: ShaoYang Lineage and WenShi Lineage: http://www.masterwu.net/MasterWuDragonGateLineage.html

The WenShi Lineage is also called Yin Xian Pai 隱仙派, the Hidden Immortal Lineage, or You Long Pai 猶龍派, the 'Just Like a Dragon Lineage' as the masters in this lineage were hermits, just like hidden dragons.

WenShi ZhenRen taught Yijing prediction techniques and internal alchemy cultivation secrets to Ma Yi Dao Zhe Li He 麻衣道者李和.

Ma Yi Dao Zhe passed his practice on to Xi-Yi Xian-Sheng >>Chen Tuan

Hai Chan Zi Liu Cao, from the Complete Reality Lineage, passed his internal alchemy practices on to Chen Tuan
