Article
[edit]This is an important article, but seems to have been neglected. I will try to add some information to it later. --TheSoundAndTheFury (talk) 13:00, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
- "....which prevented the colonial powers from directly carving up China..."
- You mean 'sought to prevent' or 'intended to prevent'.
- As the article points out, this American policy had very little practical effect.
- The US wasn't in 1901, in a position to 'prevent' the European Great Powers from doing anything. US power was 'soft' at that stage regarding major European rivals.
- Back then, decades of introspection had led Americans to greatly over-estimate the power of the USA in world affairs. Even almost 20 years later this arrogance was demonstrated at the Versailles peace conference - a naive US was easily manipulated by the Europeans. 2A01:4B00:AE0E:6200:8188:342D:C7CE:EC30 (talk) 09:47, 6 October 2024 (UTC)
Sorry,I'm being thickheaded, but I can't figure out how to make the correction to a footnote in Wikipedia itself. In fn. 5 "Peter Hayes" ought to be "Peter Hays Gries." See https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Peter_Gries.

[edit]I can't even find this scholar in Wikipedia. That her book (in English!) is referenced as published by a Chinese press (why???) does not help. Is there any way I can learn about her notability? Ahyangyi (talk) 07:06, 10 January 2015 (UTC)
Russia is a Western power?
[edit]No mention of Russia. But they were clearly part of the 8 nation alliance and you can see Nicholas II in those cartoons — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2603:8000:9B02:A846:302E:270D:B69:C0EE (talk) 12:31, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
- Russia is a European country, and China refers to European countries and US as Western countries. 23.158.104.227 (talk) 14:33, 3 April 2024 (UTC)
- I agree that Russia's position as regards China from their expansion in Siberia until 1917 is absolutely one and the same with "core" Western Europe. They should be mentioned as such, and really should be mentioned at least as much as Britain, I'll have to see what I can do. Remsense诉 14:43, 3 April 2024 (UTC)
