Some changes...

[edit]

I'm going to make some changes to this page as I've discovered quite a bit of info that's stale/could use some improvements. I'm starting with the "Business Model" section as that appears to be a guise for some spammy links and isn't exactly accurate. I'm also going to add a list of car rental companies to the bottom of the page (using the ones already listed in Wikipedia.) As this page grows, we can categorize them according to country, etc.

Please note I'm a newbie! Go easy on me. If I screw up, please let me know :) Noahlh (talk) 22:22, 22 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tweed-Lover: I understand you want to promote your site as a purveyor of the Excess insurance product, but it's not appropriate for the main article. We've left a link to your site in under the references, but there is no backup data to show that the site was indeed "the first to sell such coverage". This article is not a commercial for excess insurance -- it's a generic encyclopedic article about car rental. I think it should remain as such. 207.237.111.237 (talk) 05:18, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

History

[edit]

I have what is perhaps a strange question. When did the first rental car companies arise? Before WWI? The 1920s? I think it's something that would be interesting to know. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.174.171.176 (talk) 23:36, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good question. I suppose you mean self-drive hire? Warren (talk) 18:17, 21 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've updated the history section a little - not quite so US centric now, with Germany starting in 1912 (at least) and the UK in 1920 (at least). Far from definitive, so more info welcome! Warren (talk) 18:12, 17 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Another thing that could be covered: How did travelers rent cars before credit cards became commonplace? Thanks. knoodelhed (talk) 02:00, 27 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Fuel Policies

[edit]

The fuel policy[1] is one of the points to pay attention to when signing a car rental contract. The fuel policy applied by the companies is not always the same, so each one will establish in what state the customer will have to return the tank of the car.

Although many of them state that the customer has to return the vehicle with a full tank (under economic penalty if not done)[2], there are some that ask to return it empty and even there are those that allow the customer to choose the mode of delivery that suits them best.

Types of Fuel Policies:

[edit]

Full to Full

[edit]

This is the most common form of drop off required by car rental companies. Pick up the vehicle with a full tank and return it full. This is the best fuel option. The vehicle is full of fuel, and the customer must also return it with a full tank, to avoid any re-fuelling charges.

If the return modality established by the company is this one, At the moment of taking the rental car, the customer has to pay an amount in concept of deposit, that will be returned to him/her integral when he/she drops off the car according to the agreed.

However, in the event that the customer does not deliver the vehicle according to the agreed conditions, then the company will charge the amount for consumption plus an amount known as management costs.

Same to Same

[edit]

This is a variant of the previous one, and it is about leaving the vehicle with the same level of fuel that it had when it was collected. The vehicle will be supplied with fuel, surely it will not be full. To avoid incurring in fuel extra charges, the customer will need to drop off the vehicle with the same amount of fuel as it had when you collected it.

Prepaid (Partial Refund)

[edit]

This fuel policy is often referred to as QRS (Quick Return Service). The customer picks up the car with a full tank and returns it to the level he/she wants. At the time of picking up the car, the customer will have to pay the total amount of full tank, plus a fee for the refueling service. If the customer does not use the entire fuel tank, the supplier will return the proportional part of the unused fuel, but the refueling fee will not be refunded.

Full to Empty

[edit]

The customer picks up the car with a full tank and returns it empty. This option is usually the least beneficial for customers, it is the one that consists of delivering the vehicle with an empty tank. This does not mean that the rental company gives its customers the fuel consumed, but that they are charged when they go to collect the car.

Together with the price of the car rental and the type of insurance chosen, the company adds to the invoice the cost of filling the entire tank. However, this condition does not mean that the customer is under the obligation to return the car completely empty. Once the vehicle has been returned, the company will be able to refund the customer the price of the fuel not consumed, although this is not usually the case. That is to say, if to fill the tank of a certain car costs 50€ and the user delivers it half empty, then the company will refund to the driver approximately 25€. However, not all companies refund the amount of fuel not consumed.

The main disadvantage of this policy is that the amount charged by the company for fuel is usually higher than the actual price of a full tank as it includes administration fees. In addition, the price charged per liter of fuel is usually higher than the price it actually has on the market. --Jotaparaclines (talk) 15:32, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

These two sites are not reliable sources. Please see WP:RS for more information, encyclopedic content should be based on independent reliable sources from acknowleged experts (ideally books and journals), not on PR publications in commercial websites who are primarily interested in selling their products and services. Regarding the above content, maybe a brief summary could be included, but it would need better sources and trimming maybe to 2-3 sentences. An encyclopedic article should focus on an overview of noteworthy information for a general readership and should usually omit secondary details (see also WP:NOTGUIDE for a related guideline).
