Native range of canes
[edit]In the introduction, the article states:
- Cane are either of two genera of tall, perennial grasses ... that grow throughout the world
This is unclear. Is this intended to be the native range of canes or where they are cultivated? If it is the native range, the wording is misleading because the articles on Arundo and Arundinaria make no mention of the plants growing as natives in South America, Australia and other places. -- B.D.Mills (T, C) 22:09, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
Source needed for basic definition of "cane". (Is sugarcane not a cane?)
[edit]This article cites no sources for its definition of cane (i.e. that is consists of two relatively unrelated species of grasses).
I just made a couple of clarifying edits to the lead paragraph, making specific the two genera the article mentions and that they are of different tribes. I also added a sentence that sugarcane is a third genus, not heretofore mentioned in the article. Thus, either the article has been incorrect in defining canes as being of two genera or else sugarcane is not a cane. If the latter, that fact should be explicitly stated (as well as added to the article on sugarcane), but I can't find any good sources one way or the other.
I do find (at Encyclopedia Britannica) that sugarcane is descended from "wild cane," but can't associate or distinguish "wild cane" from "cane".
Meriam-Webster's definition includes Arundinaria, sugarcane, and sorghum (but not Arundo).
Can we find a definitive source for the meaning of "cane"?

[Corrected] System error? This talk page is showing up for two different articles!!
[edit]I just noticed that this same Talk page is showing up for both the Cane article (as https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Talk:Cane) and the Cane disambiguation page (as https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Talk:Cane_(disambiguation))! (I am clueless as to whom to report this to.) Frappyjohn (talk) 04:52, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
- Nevermind. I corrected the problem. It was due to a redirect from Talk:Cane (Disambiguation), which I have removed. Frappyjohn (talk) 04:58, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
Canebrake definition page may need to be moved to point to this article
[edit]Could someone interested in this topic attend to the mess on the canebrake disambiguation page and move the "primary" definition to point to this article (which references canebrakes a couple of times), if you think it should point here? The canebrake article has no primary page at the moment, just a disambiguation page with a definition stuck at the top. This is causing some problems. with Smackbot in pages that point to the canebrake definition at the disambiguation page. Bebop (talk) 01:20, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
Definition?
[edit]This article seems to be conflating cane as per Sugarcane, cane as per Walking stick, and cane as per Caning.
What is the primary topic (if any)? Power~enwiki (talk) 02:33, 31 July 2017 (UTC)

– The existing article at Cane is a mix between a DAB and specifically about the plant. I don't believe the plant is the primary topic over the more-generic sense of a walking stick or other uses. I propose moving this article, and moving Cane (disambiguation) here. Power~enwiki (talk) 04:53, 4 August 2017 (UTC)
- Support cane has many incoming links that would be better targeted towards other pages. Move the disambiguation page to the base title so incoming links are caught and get changed to more precise targets. Plantdrew (talk) 16:00, 4 August 2017 (UTC)
