- Is the term "campaign setting" actually used outside D&D? Ausir 10:26, 13 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- Yes, and if I have time I'd like to give a rewrite to this a go. The present page should, perhaps, be renamed to D&D Campaign settings.--Pete Darby 12:36, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)
The current article text is slightly unclear, in that it doesn't specify that AD&D and Chill are examples of RPG rules systems, whereas something like Krynn (Dragonlance) or The Forgotten Realms are examples of campaign settings. A reader unfamiliar with RPGs could get the impression that AD&D is a setting. Peter Knutsen 01:56, 7 October 2005 (UTC)
Should anti-genres be included? The Discworld RPG (based on the books setting, using GURPS rules) uses a setting that reflects and deliberately distorts fantasy stereotypes. Normality also had a setting in which standard fantasy elements had been taken to their illogical extremes in order to highlight and undermine basic assumptions of the genre. I think each of these could count as counter-fantasy. Anyone know other counter-genre games? BrunorBL, 28 May 2008. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 222.152.98.183 (talk) 14:03, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Notability
[edit]@BOZ, @Daranios, @VickKiang Ok, I really think this is a notable concept, but I am having major trouble finding any sources for this. I see mentions in passing of this term in scholarly literature, but very little SIGCOV. I'll see what I can add to this - I just found a (short) definition - but any help to improve this will be appreciated. (Merging stuff related to metaplot that Daranios is working on might help). Ps. Given the lack of refs here, I am afraid we are dealing with a major WP:OR issue here, and a WP:TNT case (although we can likely "save" this by rewriting it without a formal AfD and hard delete of history...). - I also think Sariel Xilo may have some ideas on what to do here. This is one of those "well duh, of course it's notable" topics that just need to have the sources pulled to prove it. BOZ (talk) 05:03, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for the ping! This would normally be something up my alley but unfortunately I don't have time in the next 2 weeks to dive into a research project. I'll try to circle back to this in mid to late September. Sariel Xilo (talk) 16:31, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
- As a start, Dread Trident: Tabletop Role-Playing Games and the Modern Fantastic has the D&D side of things (short mentions at p. 48/49, then throughout Chapter 3, starting p. 80, but especially p. 85). Daranios (talk) 17:47, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
- Snow, Cason (2008). "Dragons in the stacks: an introduction to role‐playing games and their value to libraries". Collection Building. 27 (2): 63–70. doi:10.1108/01604950810870218. could be quite helpful (it generally only uses "setting" instead of "campaign setting"): summarizes the major RPGs up to 2007 including their settings, and on p. 66 bottom-67 top mostly verifies our article's distinction between settings tied to and independent of a system; could also be helpful for List of campaign settings in verifying the genres for a number of them. Daranios (talk) 15:01, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
- @Sariel Xilo Take your time, the article can wait. The main question is whether we should remove the unrefeenced likely-OR that trim it to a stub? Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 12:24, 5 September 2022 (UTC)

In preparation for the merge of the Metaplot article here after the deletion discussion, several new secondary sources were found and the article improved on main issues raised in the deletion discussion to the point where the orignal nominator Piotrus and me agree that a merge is no longer necessary. Pinging the participants of the deletion discussion @Jclemens, Hobit, BOZ, Arms & Hearts, Archrogue, and MrsSnoozyTurtle: Would it be ok for you to remove the merge notice and keep metaplot a stand-alone article, or would you prefer to go through a deletion review to decide this? Thank you for your participation! Daranios (talk) 10:48, 5 September 2022 (UTC)

- If you and Piotrus agree that a merger is unnecessary in light of new information, I AGF that you're right. Jclemens (talk) 15:45, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
- I second that. Thanks for the ping. MrsSnoozyTurtle 22:18, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
- Same here, I believe our policy is that if material found to restore a deleted/merged article allows it to be recreated, then the same should apply to having an article merged in the first place. And thanks again to you for putting in the work. BOZ (talk) 12:58, 6 September 2022 (UTC)

- Good job rescuing this. I personally think that it would serve our readers better if campaign setting and metaplot were merged. I think it would be an improvement for both articles. But the AFD issue is definitely resolved at this point. Archrogue (talk) 16:32, 2 October 2022 (UTC)
- I have now removed the merge tag, as this seems ok with the majority of participants and no new opinions have been brought forth for some time. Daranios (talk) 20:02, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
