Metro Cagayan de Oro, fact or fiction
[edit]Can anyone cite facts on the use of this name? Has the local government passed a resolution creating this so called "Metro Cagayan de Oro"? I am from Cagayan de Oro and have not even heard the City Government use this name.VisitCDO (talk) 07:18, 17 September 2009 (UTC) Metro cagayan de oro was just a talk. CdeO, CDO or CDOC
[edit]When Ms. Roa, the City Historical Commissioner first proposed the use of the term CdeO, I just rolled my eyes. Her main complaint was "some visitors" kept on asking her if CDO Foods (meat products based in Manila) were sold here in Cagayan de Oro. I am not sure who her "visitors" were but for the past years, I have never heard from any of my Manila friends or local tourists comparing Cagayan de Oro with CDO Foods.
This year Ms. Roa proposed in the City Council to use CdeO instead of CDO. To make her proposal more credible, she used a "historical" argument to the name CdeO. She cited that the word "de" had some historical significance considering the old name of Cagayan de Oro was Cagayan de Misamis. What some local journalists and historians could not grasp is how could the word "de" be that historical to Cagayan? It is like saying that "de" in Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) has some historical value because it is used in all of the Ateneo schools (Ateneo de Davao, Ateneo de Naga, etc...). And how does one pronounce CdeO against CDO to differentiate the other? CdeO and CDO sounds the same unless you pronounce "de" as letter "d" and "e" which makes it more awkward. You can differentiate the two only in written form but not verbally. I find it more correct to use the initials CDOC. If we are going to use 4 characters (CDEO), we might as well use the correct initials of Cagayan De Oro City and that is CDOC. VisitCDO (talk) 06:40, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
Cagayan de Oro has 2 area codes
[edit]MisOrTel or the Misamis Oriental Telephone System is a provincial government owned company. It manages the entire provincial telephone system including the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Gingoog. When the telecom industry was opened to new players, Misortel refused to allow other telecom carriers to interconnect and use their system. Hence Philcom, Cruztelco and other phone carriers applied for a new area code and had a separate system. It was only recent that these telecom carriers interconnected with each other. Lourdes College is not a university
[edit]The education article is not a list of Cagayan de Oro schools. To avoid cluttering the article, only institutions that has achieved university status will be included. Go to List of colleges and universities in the Philippines if you wish to include your college in the list. VisitCDO (talk) 01:50, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Because of high ratio of students attending local colleges, Lourdes College, STI, and Mindanao Polytechnic State College, or MPSC, offer high number of courses. Why are there AMA and Philippine Women College listed here when they do not offer number of courses. If you exclude Broward Community College (BBC) from Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood-Pompano articles, then I am sure lot of South Florida Wikipedians will be enraged at your fruitless move. To be list such a school first should be accredited with Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities D. University status
[edit]Correction, it is Philippine Womens University (PWU). It is a Manila based university. We have to acknowledge their presence in the city even though they offer limited courses. To avoid cluttering the education paragraph only institutions with university status shall be included. Remember, this is an encyclopedia not a list of things that you just add if you feel like doing so.VisitCDO (talk) 09:06, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
Article Greatly Improved
[edit]This article has been thoroughly edited, although it isn't perfect; the content, grammar, and format of this article has been greatly improved. The article is now easier to read and understand, has a better outline, good spelling and grammar, is unbiased, and has plenty of credible references. Therefore, I nominated it for a "GA" rating; and have taken the liberty to change the Tambayan rating from "Start-Class" to "B-Class" after carefully reading through the Tambayan FAQ. -- Heroditoes 14:20, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit]hi.... first time to check the city through the web, its nice to see pictures from where I belong.... just want to comment about how updated the article is cause i read something like jaraula is still the mayor... im here in manila now and i always promote the city, by letting my fellows here see the website.. hope that you would always update this site to promote tourism.. cant wait to again.. ciao.... tc.. =
► Hi Bibianne, Jaraula is really the current mayor now. He was elected last May 2007 election. As far as I know, some informations on this site are updated but some are not. It only depends if someone will edit it. Actually, anyone all over the world is welcome to edit or add any informations on the site. To make it clear to you, read the informations about wikipedia first so that you'll know what its all about. :-) kagay-anon ni bay
hello what the heck does "1st class city mean" mean? i have never encountered this before. unsigned comment by User:Simastrick
- It's a classification based on the city's income (explained here). I probably added that line tot the article... sorry, should've made it more clear. Coffee 16:31, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
Copyrights
[edit]I am having second thoughts of contributing new articles in Wikipedia considering that copyrights are not respected. One Cagayan de Oro website used word for word (verbatim) the main article of Cagayan de Oro Wikipedia. It did not acknowledge Wikipedia as its source and copyrighted it as its own. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.84.106.196 (talk) 02:20, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Accurate to the year?
[edit]The first sentence of the History section reads: "The area of present Cagayan de Oro has been occupied by indigenous people for approximately 41,114 years." How accurate is this number? Prehistoric dates/years are mostly written as estimates (i.e. ends in ,000's), so it seems weird to have this number. Sharksfin 10:10, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
POV Statements
[edit]Saying things like "People from Cagayan de Oro are warm and hospitable", "Since then, Cagayan de Oro became one of the most progressive cities in the whole archipelago", and "Cagayan de Oro is one of the most progressive cities in the Philippines" violate the policy WP:NPOV. I have removed those statements. While these may be true, it is not appropriate to include them in Wikipedia without supporting evidence.

Fair use rationale for Image:Cagayan de Oro City seal.png
[edit]Image:Cagayan de Oro City seal.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

GA Review
[edit]I'm failing this article as a good article for, although much laudable effort has been put in, it falls too far short of the criteria today.
- Well written
Lots of issues with the text. Some are style based but there are grammar issues and much of the article is not flowing prose, but instead a little too dot-pointy.
- the lead is too short and does not adequately summarise the article (see WP:LEAD)
- for a relatively short article there are too many sections (hence the table of contents is excessive)
- Needs (some) more wikilinks. There are sections like "Economy" with none at all
- Please read Wikipedia:Manual of Style (numbers) -
- Wikilink dates for date preferences to work - so February 27, 1872 becomes February 27 1872. The use of this is inconsistent in the article.
- There are lots of short sections and paragraphs. Merge sections and paragraphs eg: The entire "Law Enforcement" section should be a single paragraph with no subheadings as there is simply not enough information for breakup to be required.
- Headings with & in them should be converted to "and" and decapitalised so "Parks & Resorts" -> "Parks and resorts"
- The text needs work to reduce redundancy and fix grammer errors eg:
- "The city's major religion is Roman Catholic. Other religions include, but are not limited to; Other Christians (Aglipay, Baptists, and Iglesia ni Kristo), Muslims, and other religions." has redundancy and other issues. ", but are not limited to;" should be just a colon and ", and other religions." is not required as it is implicit in the word "include"
- There is inconsistency in the reference formatting. If using the cite templates please use Template:cite web for the web references
- Factualness
- The article needs more, and written references and information from off-line sources. There are unreferenced parts and the article relies entirely on web-references. There appear to be books talking about the city's legal system, urban development, sociology etc.. Books like "History of Cagayan de Oro, 1622-1901 (Mardonio M. Lao)" and others need to be used to get sufficient depth.
- Broad in coverage?
- For a city of almost 1/2 million people existing for 130+ years and a provincial capital there is simply not enough information.
See the good city article Belfast for a view of the level of detail that makes a broad article. - Peripitus (Talk) 12:11, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
- Reaction to GA Review
"Ah screw you!" was my first reaction the article's assessment, however after taking a step back from the situation, I do admit to its faults, and thank you for the time and energy you spent on reviewing the article. I doubt that I'll be able to acquire the recommended text, and therefore will cease my contributions. =P Heroditoes out!
