australasia tag

[edit]

There's been a bit of to-ing and fro-ing over whether we can add a Category:Australasia tag to places that have Wallacea flora and fauna. I would like to think we can. Istanbuljohnm (talk) 03:22, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Then stop to-ing and the fro-ing won't be needed. It's already been pointed out that the category is tenous and vague. Use something more specific. It's nonsensical to use Australasia. Buru is not in Australasia. --Merbabu (talk) 03:37, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
PS - some reliable references to back up your claim would assist. --Merbabu (talk) 03:41, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There is an external link to the World Wildlife Fund data on the page. Buru has Australasian plants and animals so I wanted to link it to that - it doesn't have to be "in" Australasia to be flagged up as having some Australasian geography Istanbuljohnm (talk) 04:11, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
To put something under a category "Australasia" when it is not in Australasia is misleading whether you intend it to be, or as I suspect you don't. if there is a link between Buru and Australasia (ie, you are suggesting a link by ecozone), then use that link to categorise. But don’t worry – I’ve refined the cat for you to “Australasia (ecozone)”, but you still need to provide a reliable source otherwise, this refined cat can be removed too. I note the article Australasia ecozone is long and in-depth but has no references at all.--Merbabu (talk) 04:18, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OK have put some other places in your new category. I'll try and tidy up the ecozone article. Cheers Istanbuljohnm (talk) 04:21, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There is a very serious issue of trigger happy categorisation - please stop now before I take this to a noticeboard - read http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Overcategorization - and please leave them off - adding so many categories (huh? Australasia twice? what is wrong? ) and if you have any idea of what you are doing revert your edits now. If you dont understand - I will gladly walk through the issue of why most of the catgeories need to be removed from this article!!! In fact both the Australasia catgeories are currently open to question and should not be utilised at all SatuSuro 04:24, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
i tend to agree - while I was trying to be gentle above giving the topic the benefit of the doubt, etc, if there are no references fast, then the cats and the long Australasia ecozone article should be deleted without delay. --Merbabu (talk) 04:28, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
i see the australasia tag has gone and I do understand that the term carries a lot of uncertainty as a geopolitical construction, but I do think we need to keep the ecology category as Buru has been identified as an ecozone in its own right. I was thinking of moving the ecology content to a new article Ecology of Buru or Geography of Buru or something like that, but it seems excessive as the Buru article itself is not that long to be split up. Most of all I do hope you guys don't think I'm making any kind of political point here. I'm really only writing about plants and animals and the island is in the World Wildlife Fund's Australasia ecozone, of which I'm trying to make a comprehensive list. I wish you both a Happy New Year and much respect. John. Istanbuljohnm (talk) 23:25, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
