Reduction of services in 1990`s

As a ticket examiner working from Dundee during that period, I can tell you exactly what happened to the service. The service was covered by three DMUs running from Arbroath all the way to Perth starting at 07.00 through to 19.00 with an hourly service. The management decided that the service was not running at a profit, so to reduce the cost, they cancelled two of the trains so the service. So the service was still hourly, it was run only between Dundee and Carnoustie which resulted in a drop in passenger numbers as most of the passengers were travelling between Carnoustie and Arbroath. Because of this, it was quite often that there was more staff than passengers on the train. This allowed the services to be terminated. Management also decided at this time that they no longer need Ticket Examiners and they made our jobs redundant.
