Notability

[edit]

It seems common here (and quite reasonable) to include the primary authors of notable free software. It makes sense--if the software is notable, why shouldn't its creator(s) be? There are articles on folks like Eric Allman (sendmail), Rasmus Lerdorf (PHP), etc. It's pretty hard to argue that these guys are notable for something else. I anticipate the argument that free software is often written by hundreds of volunteers, but just as in the above cases, there are usually a small number of initial creators and/or primary authors that are really the driving force behind the software. Certainly Mediawiki is a notable piece of software--it might not have been if it hadn't been used by lots of other websites, but it has indeed overtaken other wiki software and is now a pretty major part of the infrastructure of the net. I think at least its primary forces--Me, Magnus, and Brion--merit articles here. We may not be RMS or Guido, but certainly one doesn't have to be a "celebrity" to be an important author/inventor/scientist. Yes, I realize that I am arguing for the inclusion of my own bio, but with full disclosure at least. --LDC (talk) 16:44, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How to plug-in

[edit]

Hi Brion, I am working on a different wiki, and we experience bot attacks. I should like to enhance the installed MediaWiki software to repel such attacks. My idea is to pop up a captcha for certain edit patterns. For that reason I should like to develop a piece of software running in the MediaWiki software, and that piece of software shall check for the edit pattern and pop-up the captcha. May be there is already some kind of plug-in mechanism in MediaWiki? Can you give me a hint? -- The Cascade (talk) 13:01, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect you have mistaken this page for Mr. Vibber's user page on Wikipedia, User talk:Brion VIBBER. -- 86.42.111.78 (talk) 03:38, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ooops, yes. Thanks! -- The Cascade (talk) 06:59, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's wrong for us not to have a Brion Vibber page

[edit]

Brion's the lead developer of some of the most successful software in the history of the internet. It is foolish false modesty for WP not to have an article about him. --ESP (talk) 18:54, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Of course, to make this case properly, one must substantiate it with sufficient coverage of his accomplishments, documented in acceptable secondary sources. Ringbang (talk) 17:52, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
