'Baron Cohen' is Sasha's Surname, Not 'Cohen'
[edit]Just a polite note to any editor who is tempted to edit out all the Barons in the entry. And no, it is not hyphenated. Junius (talk) 21:19, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

Origins of Borat
[edit]I have edited the origins section to cover the development of the early Borat and to include the relevant channels/dates as per entries made back in July 2006 (They seem to have been slowly edited away). Junius 11:48, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
I have added mention of 'Alexi' - The first name by which 'Borat' was known. Junius (talk) 21:13, 19 May 2012 (UTC)
'War of Terrorism'
[edit]Somebody please remove the link of Borat's quotation on 'war of terrorism' to 'War on Terrorism'. It's clearly a pun and criticizes/ridicules US politics! A strong political point is made there and the exact opposite is intended. Please don't ruin the joke. Many thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.76.20.243 (talk) 00:29, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
In the movie Borat said war of terror, the joke was simply pulling a prank on broken English and how little attention people pay to words. "directly after saying war of terror the crowd cheered" Samanthamozes (talk) 23:31, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
Correction of "Kazakhstanis" to "Kazakhs"
[edit]Dear admins,
With all respect to your work, I'd like to inform you that you have mentioned my nationals as "Kazakhstanis", which is inappropriate in our case as it is not "Pakistanis" or "Hindies", which would be correct for them. The correct form if you would like to mention the name of the national is Kazakh (singular) or Kazakhs (plural) as per Collins English Dictionary. Hope you will rectify as soon as possible. My e-mail is mazhitismailov@mail.ru for any clarifications.
Best regards, Mazhit Ismailov.
- Hindies? You mean Hindus? Nil Einne 08:39, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
- The correct term is "Kazakhstanian", as "Kazakh" is an ethnic group. Borat is not Kazakh, but Kazakhstanian. Dave420 17:59, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, "Kazakhstani" is the most accurate, as it refers to all inhabitants of Kazakhstan, whereas "Kazakh" refers to the ethnic group (they can be from any country). Specifically, in Borat's case, since "Kazakhstani" is the translated Russian word (see Kazakhstan#Kazakhs and Kazakhstanis (terminology)). It's also used when referring to things of or from Kazakhstan like the "Kazakhstani government" or "Kazakhstani culture", however, "Kazakh" is more commonly used in these cases. It's a pretty established term[1][2][3], so I'm not sure what the issue is. I'm changing it back, hopefully without conflict. I made it redirect to Kazakhs, so it still points to the same article, but it's a little more accurate. Rocket000 20:00, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
Neutrality of Viewpoint Disputed
[edit]This Wikipedia article is a thinly written press release with a strong positive spin on the movie/actor.
Surely we can do better than that.
Actually, to be honest, I believe that this article has a stronger negative spin on the movie/actor. I mean, if the guy got someone fired, he should at least help that person out of debt. Anyways, the criticsm's section is huge and the purpose of the film is not explored. I quote, "The film follows Borat in his travels across the United States, as he commits cultural solecisms and exposes a few American ones." However, as the article goes into much detail about Borat's cultural solecisms, it does nothing to explore America's. If you look past the comedy, the film goes far in exposing racism, sexism, and homophobia throughout America, at the expense of the character's own, very exaggerated racism, sexism, and homophobia. This article states next to nothing of the character's social and cultural accomplishment yet goes on to be critical of him. Also, it might make sense to reorganize the criticism section, structuring it around the different tactics used by the actor. Something like: Criticism of the representation of Kazakh culture, Criticism of public appearances in character, and so on.--24.61.183.36 07:17, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
- A lot of what you're looking for in this article would be deemed as original research which isn't allowed on Wikipedia, so we'd need to get some reliable sources analyzing the movie and the purpose behind it in order to include that in the article. Yonatan talk 08:51, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Borat is part of WikiProject Judaism
[edit]What? Does Borat have any relations with judaism?
- The actor who portrays him, Sacha baron Cohen, is Jewish. IMO this should not be part of that wikiproject either. I think it should be changed and Sacha Baron Cohen added to the wikiproject Judiasm. Any other opinions?
I agree!--86.29.241.84 (talk) 20:07, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Category antisemitism?
[edit]Should this really be under that category, most of the other categories are 'fictional', so shouldn't it be 'fictional anti-semitism' or something? Apart from the crackpots at the ADL, I don't see anyone actually believing that Cohen is anti-semitic, most accept the explanation that by portraying this image, he shows many peoples true colours, as they either embrace the anti-semitism, or are at least apathetic. Productplacer (talk) 07:14, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
- Uhm, that category isn't for labeling people based on their personal view, but rather listing cases where the theme antisemitism is being touched / featured, like in this film. 78.110.160.85 (talk) 18:53, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

Move to include surname
[edit]This is the proper title of this article, because the fact is that people searching for "Borat" will most likely wish to be directed directly to the article on the actual movie, while few will actually want the article on the character himself. In addition, it is more correct for the surname to be in the title at any rate. —Anonymous DissidentTalk 11:23, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

Semi-protection
[edit]I've semi protected the article, meaning you have to be a registered and autoconfirmed Wikipedia editor to edit it. This is because of a simple onslaught (two within minutes for example) of IP edits, fake names being added, commentary and OR, you name it. I need to go through the article with a fine tooth comb to get rid of what shouldn't be there and this will at least slow down the flood, perhaps this will take me a week or so. After that, we can have a discussion about unprotection.--Wehwalt (talk) 13:04, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

Pamela Anderson's involvement?
[edit]Are there any known sources that clarify Pamela Anderson's level of involvment, i.e. how much was staged/how much she knew ahead of time? The scene seemed pretty real, but one has to question how close the camera crew could have gotten to her if it had not been staged. This is something that is currently lacking from the article that I think would improve it. A quick search turned up this link, but it seems to be based mostly on the statements of an unnamed insider, and not any direct quote by Anderson or anyone involved with the film. I'm not sure how reliable it is or if there might be any better references out there. –Fierce Beaver (talk) 19:14, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
- I've never seen anything, but plainly they could not have used her image in the film without her consent. Thus I conclude it was all staged or possibly adlibbed. Of course, she knew everything.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:33, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
- Well, Sasha seems to have gotten away with this sort of thing very often. Though I guess it'd be different with her - she has money, and that'll push the courts pretty hard. In short, I feel that more research is needed. 207.210.29.71 (talk) 06:09, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
- All the people in the movie who were not actors signed releases. Most not really knowing what they were signing, of course. As for research, feel free.--Wehwalt (talk) 12:37, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

strange description of the fake 'kazakh' language
[edit]I don't think the blurb on the page about 'the Borat movie being popular in Israel because the Borat character is speaking fluent Hebrew when pretending to speak Kazahk'.
Borat's words really sound more like nonsense combinations of Polish words, not Hebrew.
Unless Hebrew is derived from bits and pieces of the Polish language... I don't think this is accurate. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.131.58.86 (talk) 02:56, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Original Research
[edit]I've added an Original Research tag to the line, "Like Baron Cohen's satirical antisemitism, however, when viewed in context, the character's intolerance and bigotry towards Roma (whom he refers to as "Gypsies") actually provide what is likely the most visible stance against antiziganism in popular culture today."
No citation is provided, nor is any attribution to source made. That the assertion isn't followed with supporting argument or explanation of what is meant by "context" is also problematic, and could perhaps warrant a "Neutrality of viewpoint" tag, or some such.
