The reason for the "balds" in the great balsams and the shining rock/middle prong wilderness was due to extensive logging on the area peaks and the great fires that followed. These fires burned completely down into the mineral rich soils, resulting in a very slow forest reforestation (or none at all) what might be true for the great smoky mtns, IS NOT true for the bald peaks of southern haywood county. Get your info right!
