Re-assessment
[edit]I am re-assessing this article for WikiProject Schools following a request. First, the athletic history of the school is probably enough for mid-importance, so I will give it that. I have marked the logo as having some problems which need resolving, as it is copyrighted the resolution needs to be drastically reduce, a source (i.e. a link) for where the image came from needs to be given, and a fair use rationale needs to be provided. The other images I have tagged as candidates to be moved to Wikimedia Commons as it would allow them to be used by other projects. For B-class the article must meet the B-class criteria at WP:BCLASS. I will review the article against them now:
- Criterion 1: The article is generally well referenced with plenty of inline citations. Use of citation templates is not required for B-class but are used here, however some of the parameters seem to be missing, see Template:Cite web and fill in as many as possible per source.
- Criterion 2: The article could still do with some expansion, though enough of the important sections are covered for B-class. WP:WPSCH/AG covers most possible sections in school articles, obvious ones missing here include notable alumni and extra-circular activities beyond athletics (which can be split off from Academics). Existing sections could do with expansion as well, for example the history section has little beyond 1962.
- Criterion 3: Article has a clear layout, and a lead section is included. The lead could do with expansion, it should summarise the article as well as introduce it per WP:LEAD.
- Criterion 4: Is well written enough for B-class, no serious issues with the writing style.
- Criterion 5: An infobox and illustrations included.
- Criterion 6: No issues with technical terms.
Overall, I will give this article a pass for B-class. Camaron · Christopher · talk 17:57, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

OSSAA Section
[edit]I had edits to the Athletics section based on a current federal lawsuit that were deleted. Unless there is a consensus that this is not newsworthy, I will undo. BillTunell (talk) 20:04, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
- @BillTunell: Adding multiple paragraphs of detail about a lawsuit against an athletic organization is both undue and out-of-scope for a school article. Please note that WP:WPSCH/AG#WNTI specifically mentions the need to remain neutral and to avoid trivial content. Please seek a consensus before reinserting your edit. Magnolia677 (talk) 19:54, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
- I waited to see if anyone other than us would chime in. Since it's just us, I'll say I'm very familiar with all the wiki guidelines, but you seem to just resent the content. I have to assume that itself is a bias. The additions I made are not about trivial details, they are about pending constitutional litigation. None of the examples in WP:WPSCH/AG#WNTI apply here. I did change some of the language for some more balance, and kept the "dispute" language in the subheading, which I think is fair. BillTunell (talk) 21:59, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
@BillTunell: The text you have re-inserted about a legal dispute is out-of-scope and WP:UNDUE. The input of others would be appreciated regarding the text below:

McGuinness competes by default in Class 4A athletics within the OSSAA.[1] An OSSAA classification scheme was disputed by the school in 2014, and a lawsuit was filed by McGuinness.[2] A compromise solution was reached in 2015.[3] Further OSSAA rule changes led to another lawsuit in 2023 by a consortium of five Oklahoma private schools.[4][5] |
McGuinness competes by default in Class 4A athletics within the OSSAA, based on its enrollment—defined as an Average Daily Membership (“ADM”).[6] However, most McGuinness sports compete in other classes under OSSAA’s Rule 14, which since April 2011 has mandated that schools meeting certain criteria (essentially, private schools) be elevated in class after finishing in the top 8 of any given sport in 2 of the 3 preceding years[7][8] This reclassification scheme has met with controversy. On September 8, 2014, a lawsuit was filed by McGuinness in the federal District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma against the OSSAA concerning this issue based on constitutional grounds.[9] A compromise solution was announced in June 2015 in which no school would be reclassified to the highest competitive class in any sport (normally Class 6A), and that success in boys and girls programs would be considered separately. Football would have a separate rule allowing elevation of only one classification, and not into Class 6A.[10] Subsequently, the OSSAA has proposed further restrictions on Oklahoma private schools. In 2018, the OSSAA considered proposed amendments to OSSAA’s Rule 14 which would form a separate playoff classification scheme for private schools.[11] These amendments were reconsidered in March 2023, precipitating a cease-and-desist letter from Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond, and subsequently tabled.[12] On June 7, 2023, the OSSAA approved another change to Rule 14 which would remove the limitation on the highest classification to which a program could be elevated, and consider either boys or girls success in “coupled” sports (such as basketball) for elevation of both programs. For football, class elevation could be to a maximum of two (instead of the previous one), with a cap on elevation beyond Class 6A-II. However, success criteria would be met if a program finished in the top 4 of a given sport (rather than the previous top 8).[13][14] This approved rule change precipitated another lawsuit by a consortium of five Oklahoma private schools, including McGuinness, filed in December 2023 in Oklahoma County District Court, on state statutory and constitutional grounds.[15][16][17] Pending the outcome of the lawsuit, the OSSAA currently classifies McGuinness as Class 6A-II in Football,[18] Class 6A in Cheer,[19] Boys Golf,[20] Soccer,[21][22] and Girls Swimming,[23] Class 5A in Baseball,[24] Cross-Country,[25] Girls Golf,[26] Tennis,[27][28] Track,[29] Boys Swimming,[30] Volleyball,[31] and Wrestling,[32] and 4A in Softball.[33] |

Magnolia677 (talk) 00:34, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
This level of detail regarding the dispute is too much for this article. It involves a number of other schools. Further, we don't need this level of detail about the lawsuits. Only the effects on the school and its current application are of import. Some (not all) of this detail would be appropriate at Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association. --Hammersoft (talk) 01:41, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
- Agreed. Far more detail than is required for the school's article. Magnolia677's version is close to enough, but it could be tweaked a bit. We should include a brief mention of what the actual issue is that is being contested, and we should specify that the 2023 lawsuit consortium includes Bishop McGuiness.
- By the way, the original 2011, 2013 and 2014 refs are all dead. Meters (talk) 06:39, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Hammersoft and Meters: Could you please review the revised edit below. Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 12:12, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
McGuinness competes by default in Class 4A athletics within the OSSAA.[1] A 2011 OSSAA classification change—which mandated that private schools be elevated in class after finishing in the top eight of any given sport in two of the three preceding years[2][3]—was disputed by the school in 2014, and a lawsuit was filed by McGuinness.[4] A compromise solution was reached in 2015.[5] Further OSSAA rule changes led to another lawsuit in 2023 by a consortium of five Oklahoma private schools, including Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School.[6][7]

Works for me. --Hammersoft (talk) 14:11, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
- It's good, but these rule changes really do appear to be targeting the private schools. How about changing the last sentence to "In 2023, after the Oklahoma Attorney General prevented the OSSAA from creating a separate postseason playoff bracket for private schools, further OSSAA rule changes affecting private schools led to another lawsuit by a consortium of five Oklahoma private schools, including Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School."?
