"Putative Kshatriyas"
[edit]The Pala kings were distinguished rulers, patrons of Nalanda and Vikramshila. Why are they termed simply as "putative Kshatriyas"? Malaiya (talk) 19:07, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
- This is the opinion of Wink and since the reference by Wink, which is a reliable source, is cited here, therefore we have no other option but to state what he says. If you try to show all opinions, the lead section will simply be a mess. Thanks. Ekdalian (talk) 19:37, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
Merger Discussion
[edit]- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
- To separate content on Basu and Bose (surname) to remove duplication and treat European names more equally on Bose (surname). Klbrain (talk) 11:45, 2 September 2023 (UTC)
Request received to merge articles: Bose (surname) into Basu. Dated September 2015. Discuss here. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 22:12, 28 November 2015 (UTC)
- There is no rationale given here for this, though the Merge Requests page has "Merge Bose (surname) into Basu. Former is the anglicized form of the latter" from User:BengaliHindu and dated 13 January 2015.
- I would oppose this move; there is no evidence to support the claim that the surname Bose is merely an anglicization of Basu. It would seem from the articles linked that the Bengali name (written বসু and rendered on a couple of pages (like here) as Boshu) can be anglicized in several ways; Bose, Bosu and Basu being three. There is no reason to assume one is better than another. Also, this being a WP page, and based on reliable sources, surnames these people has to reflect how they are commonly known.
- There is very little overlap or duplication here (which are valid reasons to merge); Of 26 names on the Bose (surname) page only four are people called Basu, and of the 20 here, only six are called Bose, (with 2 others whose names are given in both forms). In addition, the Bose page also contains 8 non-Indian names, none of which would fit on the Basu page even if the original premise was granted. Moonraker12 (talk) 23:00, 23 December 2015 (UTC)
- PS:I've thinned out the overlap, such as it was: Also (a further observation) I notice Amar Bose spells his name বোস while Jyoti Basu's name is spelt বসু , which suggests maybe they no more the same than Thompson, Thomson or Thomsen. Moonraker12 (talk) 23:41, 23 December 2015 (UTC)
Reopening this - we have two articles with essentially same content under variant spellings. We have to pick one spelling and go with it. Bose (surname) also has small amount of content on unrelated subject (von Bose) that should be moved to its own article. 203.192.209.200 (talk) 02:57, 22 December 2022 (UTC)
- Rather than merge, why don't we just move the Indian-origen Bose content over to Basu, add a hatnote to distinguish, and leaving the remaining 10 names for Bose (and von Bose) of European origin where they are. This saves having to create a new page. Klbrain (talk) 21:31, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
