I found these dictionary defintions that might me useful in another article:

* The high-traffic-density connectivity portion of any communications network.

The result of the move request was: withdrawn. I forgot about Backbone network. Not wanting to pursue this further. Steel1943 (talk) 18:59, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

BackboneBackbone (disambiguation) – I think this revision of this page had it right: "Backbone" should be a redirect towards Vertebral column per WP:PRIMARYREDIR. Steel1943 (talk) 23:15, 29 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • https://wikinav.toolforge.org/?language=en&title=Backbone indicates there's a nice spread of reader interest between various topics, where in October '23 there were 74 identified clickstreams to the proposed primary topic out of 438 total views which is ~17%, so a more coherent argument on long-term significance would be necessary to explain why we'd want to risk badly navigating the other ~83% of readers. Certainly the derived terms in computer networking, with no less than two articles in the same top list of reader interest, already indicate there is substantial scholarly significance in topics other than the original one, it's not just the novelty items like the recently released game. --Joy (talk) 09:01, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

BackboneBackbone (disambiguation) – I am reopening this move discussion as I disagree with the previous rationale for withdrawing it. Even if it is not primary by pageviews, it is easily primary by longterm significance. The original meaning is obvious: back + bone, bones in the back of an animal. Backbones have existed for eons, while computers have not. Apple does not go to the software company either, and suggesting backbones, a major part of human anatomy, are equivalently primary to a bunch of wires and a router is ludicrous to me. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 11:48, 8 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Leaning support by Vertebral column being the primary target by long-term significance. BD2412 T 17:02, 8 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • The usage stats did not change much since: WikiNav for October says 450 people saw the list and we could only identify 83 clicks to the first entry. There were also 73 filtered clickstreams, but it doesn't seem terribly likely these were for that entry, rather with how the distribution looks, it seems more likely they're about the long tail.
If we consistently can't make more than 20% of readers click the most obvious entry and read about this topic, we should take a hint - they're just not looking for this topic at a level that would justify a claim of overwhelming usage or significance.
Force-feeding readers doesn't seem like a particularly useful endeavor (WP:RF). (Oppose) --Joy (talk) 13:34, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
