Reception
[edit]The "Reception" section doesn't provide much information about what viewers and critics thought. Instead it covers the making of the film and its DVD releases.

[edit]I added a screenshot and a DVD cover, the american one is too ugly. --Marc Lacoste 11:03, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
- Not a problem there, but can you specify in the caption which DVD edition this is? I don't recognize it myself. 23skidoo 14:58, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
- The cover is the Region 3 Hong Kong release, by Panorama. --- Trench 20:42, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks. I like it better than the North American version (in more ways than one -- I'm still cheesed off about the addition of "hand-holding" narration to the English version). 23skidoo 22:43, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

A comment on this section: "The North American version has added narration to make it easier for Americans to understand the plot". Why would they do such a thing? This doesn't make much sense. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.103.49.82 (talk) 03:27, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
Story
[edit]I have a few problems.. "In a distant future" I don't think that this is necessarily the case. To me this film evoked that fantastical industrialism of final fantasy seven. The battle's and so on, the roles of each player/actor. Maybe "alternate universe", or something similar, would be more mysterious than "distant future". Then the next sentance begins "In a kind of.." which sounds repetitive and well.. tired. It really is a story peppered with contradictions and therefore quite difficult to eloquently re-tell. I have trouble putting into words what that movie was about.. but I know it was damn cool. "Especially in higher levels the spirit of the player may stay inside the game, and the body stays vegetating in hospitals in the real world." I think more points like these would be good. Is it ok for me to edit the article a little bit?--Tapsell 03:01, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
- You don't need permission as "Be Bold" is one of the credos around here. I'd advise to steer clear of speculation, however as that's a no-no. If the film doesn't specify an alternate universe then we shouldn't say so; similarly the film never really specifies if it takes place in the future, either. Describe what is seen on screen and you'll do fine. Of course if you can provide a cited article or other source in which the writer/director makes comments about what it all means (especially the little girl), please add that as well. 23skidoo 03:41, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
How about all that happens is people talk and then Oshii shows the same montage over and over again and finally, two hours later she reaches "level real" where she shoots an old friend (after about another 30 minutes of talking and silent montages), while the same god damn music that's been playing the whole movie plays AGAIN. and then the movie finally ends. seriously, probably one of the worst films i have seen in my life. You probably wanna edit my summary for NPOV before you put it on the page.
- Please sign your comments if you want them taken seriously. You're welcome to your opinion, but in any event Wikipedia is not a movie review site. 23skidoo 02:24, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
- I also think this film is not placed in a fare future. It is more like that people are addicted to a game which became "there reality" and Ash is going back to the real world at the end. -- cu AssetBurned (talk) 21:50, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
THe influences section is a kind of vague mess of filmstudenty POV and original research... to which I added by noting the evident (to me) influence on Avalon of Tarkovsky's 'Stalker.' :)
Someone should probably find out what films, if any, factually inspired or were inspired by Avalon and totally redo the section so it's not just a list of other films Avalon fans might enjoy. :P 84.13.226.182 01:02, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:Avalon film screenshot.jpg
[edit]Image:Avalon film screenshot.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
