Why is this under the scientific name?
[edit]Generally Wikipedia uses the common name of living things if one exists; surely "yardlong bean" is common and unambiguous, and a lot more recognizable to the average reader than Vigna unguiculata subsp. sesquipedalis. Are there other beans commonly known as "yardlong beans"? Vultur (talk) 10:51, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Requested move 6 February 2017
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: moved to Asparagus bean. Jenks24 (talk) 09:34, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
Vigna unguiculata subsp. sesquipedalis → Yardlong bean – Per WP:COMMONNAME and WP:FLORA. As this plant is extensively consumed as a vegetable, the large majority of reliable sources covering it are non-scientific sources using the generic name. Paul_012 (talk) 19:35, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
- Oppose why yardlong bean? Asparagus bean is a much more commonly used name than yardlong bean according to Google Ngrams, and yard long bean is competitive with yardlong bean in recent years. What evidence shows that yardlong bean is the most appropriate title per WP:COMMONNAME? Plantdrew (talk) 05:31, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
- I have no problem with Asparagus bean as the target. Would you support a move to that name? (Your "oppose" suggests a preference for retaining the scientific name as the title.) --Paul_012 (talk) 08:36, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
- Support move to Asparagus bean per above. ONR (talk) 11:50, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
- The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
Subspecies
[edit]Vigna unguiculata subsp. sesquipedalis is in fact the 'sesquipedalis' group of the Vigna unguiculata subsp. unguiculata (See this). And asparagus beans are just a cultivar in that group. Other cultivars include something like File:Vigna unguiculata subsp. sesquipedalis.jpg which is long ('sesquipedalis'), but looks and tastes quite different from asparagus beans. --Gomuragi (talk) 05:43, 21 September 2018 (UTC)
