I lived in Goroka in 1971 to 1973 (worked for the Kiaps, No 1 Kus Kus) and was told that the Mudmen were an invention of a Patrol Officer who wanted something different for the Goroka Show — Preceding unsigned comment added by 180.181.183.180 (talk) 12:59, 13 April 2017 (UTC)

The 'Asaro Mudmen Tribe' and the ghostly masks and body paint and the corresponding origin story about it are an elaborate mythology created by native Asaro Valley villagers in the 1950s to perform for tourists.
