Jericho??

[edit]

The following 2 sentences appeared on Jericho (disambiguation):

Jericho is an ancient city in the West Bank, with historical and Biblical significance, particularly in regards to the Battle of Jericho.
Another town of the same name, although mis-transliterated to Latin according to the recent Arabic spelling, Arihah, is located in northern Syria.

The meaning of the first one is clear (altho it is not a sentence that can appear on the Dab page for "Jericho", and it is being rewritten). Presumably the Jericho article already expresses the facts of the first sent, and that is the appropriate place for them.
The second of those sentences has three problems:

  1. It is so awkwardly worded that it must probably be read at least three times in order to reach a point where you stop having the feeling that you must have misread it, and if you read it once or twice more, you'll lessen a significant danger of misinterpreting it. ("Arihah" appears to be a noun of apposition, but is it in apposition to "town", "name", or "spelling"? "Town" is my impulse, but you can't transliterate a town so is it "Jericho" (latinization of the Hebrew name for Jericho), or the Hebrew name for Jericho, or "Arihah" (latinization of the Arabic (or Hebrew) name for Arihah), or an Arabic name for Jericho or Arihah, that's been "mis-transliterated to Latin according to the recent Arabic spelling" (whatever that means!)of a Hebrew, Arabic, or Indo-European name? I'm not willing to weigh the puzzle further.
  2. Dab pages disambiguate article titles, but a Dab entry avoids impeding navigation by limiting its content to what is needed to recognize which entry corresponds to the desired topic, and leaving to the article it links to the task of providing the user with information about the corresponding topic.
  3. Nothing resembling the content of the second sentence exists at Arihah. (And i for one won't pursue the possibility that it exists at Arabic language!)

AFAIC see, a core problem in construing the second sentence are that "the same name" is ambiguous, since each "town" (the articles call each a city) has probably had names differing between ethnic groups and in response to linguistic evolution, and at any given time has plausibly had 7 distinct names in the various varieties of Arabic alone; is Paris (PARE-us) the same name as Paris (pah-REE) and Paris (PAHR-eese, ich glaube)? What about Parigi?
If there is a need for Arihah to be accessible to users who will look for it as "Jericho", that is one of the tasks that Jericho (disambiguation) exists to perform (but if so, Arihah has to at least mention "Jericho", and i can't tell in what form it should be mentioned in that article). If that isn't what the second sentence is trying accomplish, neither it nor anything trying to accomplish its unknown purpose belongs on the Dab page, so i have to wash my hands of it.

The result of the move request was: page moved. Unopposed request. (non-admin closure) Eventhorizon51 (talk) 14:25, 15 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

– While Ariha is the Arabic name of Jericho, in English-language sources, Syrian Ariha clearly constitutes the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. A hatnote pointing to Jericho is enough, and actually easier to navigate. PanchoS (talk) 11:14, 30 June 2016 (UTC) --Relisting. Anarchyte (work | talk) 12:49, 8 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

no, we need another page

[edit]

I want to bring this back up for review. The "Jericho" disambiguation page simply isn't enough; for native Arabic speakers, Syrians, and Muslims who search on "Ariha" first. I know I got messed up once in looking at a reference to "Ariha" in an old hadith, long before anyone heard of this new Ariha in Syria. We need some form of the "About" tag on this page. --Zimriel (talk) 18:14, 29 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned references in Ariha

[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Ariha's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 19:46, 1 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
