Requested move (2009)

[edit]

Asociación del Fútbol ArgentinoArgentine Football Association — The standard among football federation articles is to display the english-language name as the title and state the native-language name in the first sentence of the article. AniRaptor2001 (talk) 09:42, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move

[edit]
The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: not moved. Clearly no consensus to move. I also note that, in my opinion, neither the nom nor the two support votes quote any WP:AT-based rationale for the proposed move, and it could even be argued that seen through the lens of policy there's at least a rough consensus not to move, but that's not a supervote on my part, just a comment for any interested. The basis of the close is no consensus, and let's move on. Andrewa (talk) 05:42, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Association of the Argentine FootballArgentine Soccer Association – See the official site of the AFA in English language, at the external links section. You can see the proposed name next to the logo. Cambalachero (talk) 23:58, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. WP:EN states that the "title of an article should generally use the version of the name of the subject which is most common in the English language, as you would find it in reliable sources". Argentine Football Association is far more common than both Argentine Soccer Association and Association of the Argentine Football. --OneEuropeanHeart (talk) 02:39, 21 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom, also clarifies what sport this is about, as in the Americas, there's another sport called Football in English. -- 65.94.171.126 (talk) 07:14, 21 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose It seem like an minor error on the website bar. In the English language version of the AFA site, in the actual content of the articles inside (e.g. History, Origins, Presidents, etc.) it is consistently and only referred to as Argentine Football Association, and never as "Argentine Soccer Association". Evidently the webmaster's mistake. Someone should let them know. Walrasiad (talk) 02:07, 22 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom. Calidum Talk To Me 04:38, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. The game is called football pretty much everywhere outside North America. The name in Spanish is clearly "football" (it would be quite ironic if we translated a Spanish loan word from English into another English word!). The association generally uses and is known by "football". -- Necrothesp (talk) 12:50, 25 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • In much of the English-speaking world it is soccer, or football is ambiguous. (soccer: North America, Australia, South Africa) (ambiguous: Ireland (Gaelic Football), New Zealand (rugby) ) (conflicting: North America (gridiron football), Australia (AFL), South Africa (rugby) ). -- 65.94.171.126 (talk) 06:33, 26 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
