Capitalization of Al-Qaeda in name

[edit]

I started a discussion on how to format names with al-Qaeda in the title at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Terrorism#Acronyms of groups with al-Qaeda in name.~Technophant (talk) 17:42, 25 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Al-Qaeda in the Indian SubcontinentAl-Qaeda in Pakistan – As per WP:COMMONNAME.

  • Check the google trends analysis also
In the Indian subcontinent, they are present mainly in Pakistan. Al-Qaeda has no presence in India, Nepal, Bangaldesh, Sri Lanka.
Al-Qaeda related terror incidents dominate Pakistan repeatedly. Other parts of Indian subcontinent don't have any Al-Qaeda related terror incidents, though Al-Qaeda claims to have connection which is never proved. The Avengers 17:20, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]
  • Oppose - It appears that the AQIS is a self-declared organisation which has enough coverage to warrant a Wikipage. Al-Qaeda in Pakistan might also be a topic worthy of a Wiki page, but I don't see the need to mix up the two. - Kautilya3 (talk) 19:00, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - This article is about the organisation called Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent, founded in 2014 and lead by Asim Umar. Al-Qaeda has a presence in lots of countries including Pakistan, but this article is about this specific affiliate. Gazkthul (talk) 00:00, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - This article is about the affiliate established in September 2014 with the name Jama'at Qa'idat al-Jihad fi Shibh al-Qarrah al-Hindiyah. Per WP:COMMONNAME, Wikipedia "generally prefers to use the name that is most frequently used to refer to the subject in English-language reliable sources. This includes usage in the sources used as references for the article." The overwhelming majority of English sources, including the references currently cited in the article, refer to this affiliate as "al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent". This also happens to be the literal translation of the group's name. There are also some sources that refer to it as "al-Qaeda in South Asia," but this name is not as common as the other. I have not seen any sources that refer to this group as "al-Qaeda in Pakistan". Axiom292 (talk) 03:06, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
