....bad

Why do the cities ed in "bad" like Islamabad, Ahmedabad. etc... Is it something to do with the language? I presume it means cityTourskin 05:05, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

I cannot give you any source right now, but probably this suffix "-bad" comes from abad which in Urdu (and may be in Arabic) means a populated place. nagar is another suffix for many South Asian places. Nagar in Sanskrit means town. These are somewhat like "-ville" in many English speaking nations. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 05:52, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
Yes, it translates as "City of Ahmed" (Sultan Ahmed Shah being the founder). As far as I know the suffix abad originates in Persian. Abecedare 09:22, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
The suffix 'abad' comes from Persian not Arabic. It means 'abode' or dwelling place not exactly 'city'. Maquahuitl 13:46, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Great Religious Diversity?

As it is now, the article states that this city enjoys "great religious diversity." It seems to me that the majority of citizens are hindu. What constitutes great religious diversity? Diversity compared to what? 68.165.56.43 17:59, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

  • Why make comments which have no factual basis, have you ever been to Ahmedabad? What do you know about ahmedabad. To make any comments about any city without even having seen it once in person is nothing but a prejudiced remark made by the one sided reporting of a place made by some third person. Please visit ahmedabad first before making such comments. I have enough hindu, muslim, christian, sikh, jain, parsi and sindhi friends to know that such a diversity exists and i dont depend on some media reports but i know it first hand. And please if you do want to start a debate do not go and hide under the cloak of anonymity. lets have a free and fair debate about it under wiki policy.Kaushal mehta 08:57, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
  • As far as wiki policy goes, when you say that you "dont depend on some media reports but i know it first hand", you are exactly describing what is called Original Research. Eleven even (talk) 04:07, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
  • I agree with the comment 'great religious diversity'. If you go to lal darwaja, you have a mahalaxmi temple and opposite to it you have a big masjid. I know people from different religions living happiliyt togather for years in ahmedabad. But at times is highly sensitive to communal riots.
  • Seems that Ahmedabad does have religious diversity, especially when compared to baselines in other parts of the world. Is that what OP was asking? I mean, if you compare to the diversity of a Scandinavian country, for example, Ahmedabad seems very diverse. According to Kaushal mehta, there are clearly well over 6 major religions represented within the city. I believe this constitutes "religious diversity" Amit (talk) 03:20, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

this article has neutrality and citation issues

Various gems that I have found:

  • Ahmedabad has become a hot spot for real estate development many developers are eyeing the Ahmedabad market for development of residential property.
Unsourced.
  • Ahmedabad is on its way to become be the Detroit of the East
Senseless and unsourced promotionalism.
  • Ahmedabad is a thriving center for Chemical and Pharmaceutical industries... In recent year many foreign companies have set up their sales offices and production facilities in Ahmedabad.
This is a nice example of unsourced wikipuffery.
  • Ahmedabad enjoys a thriving cultural tradition
So doesn't every other city?
  • Ahmedabad is only city where Marriott group hotel has exclusive veg restaurant in the world
An extraordinary, but unsourced claim.
  • However, it is most famous for its food stalls that start to emerge around 8 in the evening, with various local street snacks and goodies. Out of all Pineapple Sandwich & Gwalia Dhosa are world famous
Most famous compared to what?
  • in the new city, one can also find the North American restaurants like McDonald's and Subway

Wrong sex ratio

AFAIK sex ratio is approx. equal to 1.0. Here the number is 903. What is the correct number? Gil_mo (talk) 04:45, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

I suspect the number comes from the Census of India source. I can't find the latest data right now, but this is the 2001 data: [2]. You can see that they use the numbers as number of girls per 1000 boys. This is not the scientific standard, you are correct, but is the CoI standard. If you want, you could correct it based on census data and use the most common scientific notation. effeietsanders 07:17, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
It's 903. I got the source, it's from census 2011 government website here. The first .xls file contains the information. --kondi talk/contribs 08:27, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
Yes, the number is probably correct. But the way it is presented is not the scientific standard. See Sex ratio - usually the ratio results in a number between 0 and 2 depending on the definition used. effeietsanders 12:18, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
In the infobox i've written 1.11. --kondi talk/contribs 13:22, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

are tourist websites accepted?? Even govt ones??? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 05:50, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
I think so as it is recognized by Tourism ministry of Guj and Govt. of India. So it is less likely that they will upload false info. TheSpecialUserTalkContributions 05:52, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
Question: I haven't removed the references for now. But TheSpecialUser how can you (and want us to) believe that the website is acknowledged by Govt of Gujarat? Kondi (talk) 07:49, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

See this: http://www.gujaratindia.com/ (Official state portal) in the bottom of the page, theres a link which opens into http://www.gujarattourism.com/ from which, I cited. If you still feel that the website is not proper, please remove the ref and also try to find few. TheSpecialUserTalkContributions 07:56, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

Whoa, first of all the discussion here is about [3] and [4], I was referring to these two websites. Second you might wanna see the history to see how many references I have added (and which are reliable). Kondi (talk) 09:47, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
GujaratIndia.com says Copyright 2009, which may result in factual inaccuracy. A Tourism site, Govt. or not, serves to get more people to the locality, and hence will have a POV. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 09:54, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
We work per consensus so please remove if this is final. TheSpecialUserTalkContributions 09:57, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
Consensus isn't required for removing dubious refs. Besides, since you are aiming for a GA, remember that during the review, such links will be removed. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 12:59, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

GA review (see here for what the criteria are, and here for what they are not)
  1. It is reasonably well written.
a (prose): b (MoS for lead, layout, word choice, fiction, and lists):
    • Wikilinks should only be made if they are relevant to the context. Common words do not need wikilinking. Fixed
    • Spelling mistake: "Mugal" → "Mughal" Fixed
    • Grammatical errors such as "A image" found. Fixed
    • Avoid peacock terms, such as "beautiful", "famous", "popular", "well-known", "significant", "important" and "obvious". Fixed
    • The lead should adequately summarize the content of the article. (I see the lead tells nothing about cuisine and all.) Fixed
  2. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
a (references): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR):
    • Web references need the author, publisher, publishing date and access date.  Fixed
    • More sources needed in "Etymology", "British rule", "Art and literature", "Air", "Rail", Education" & "Media". Fixed
  3. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects): b (focused):
  4. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
    Fair representation without bias:
  5. It is stable.
    No edit wars, etc.:
  6. It is illustrated by images, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free images have fair use rationales): b (appropriate use with suitable captions):
  7. Overall:
    Pass/Fail:

I've just gone through the references and corrected them where necessary; fixed some citations for consistency (converting to {{cite}}) and added missing info where available. Ankit, would you mind tagging the bits you think need references (per GA criterion 2) with a {{cn}} template; it would help those of us trying to fix the article to focus our efforts. Cheers, Yunshui  12:01, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, will try and work on them today. Yunshui  06:39, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
Okay, have added citations for all but three of the tags. Two I've removed because the text doesn't require citations for the purposes of GA (although obviously references would be good!), the one in the Etymology section I've left - I can't find a source for this saying in English sources, so I think one of our Indian editors (I'm looking at you, TSU!) will have to find it in the original Hindi. Yunshui  07:29, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Yunshi for your great efforts! I am getting more busy day by day and thus my activities might reduce but I will still be here. I have added to the popular saying (it was though) and as said by Yunshi, other 2 things didn't needed to be cited. So Ankit, can you change the mark at references if it is okay now. I m working on other fixes too. Cheers! →TSU tp* 08:23, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
I've now removed all of the irrelevant wikilinks I could find. Yunshui  09:16, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, just some tasks more.--Ankit MaityTalkContribs 11:28, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
Okay, I think I've addressed everything. I've removed irrelevent wikilinks; double-checked spelling, grammar and tone (although I may have missed some things, it's a long article!); expanded the lead a bit (and removed the references from it); added full details to those citations where such detail was available and unified them all under the {{cite}} template format; and added citations to all those sections that required it. Ankit, please could you re-review when convenient and let us know if there's anything more you feel needs to be done? Yunshui  12:24, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
Just add the reference and then I will pass this GA request.--Ankit MaityTalkContribs 16:16, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
I m little confused here. Can you please clarify that what actually needs ref? Cheers! →TSU tp* 16:19, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Never mind. Sorry, got it now. →TSU tp* 16:22, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

For now, I provided 2 refs and removed 2 unsourced lines. I may re-add them in future if I got any sources. For now, I think that I have addressed your issue :) →TSU tp* 10:50, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

Please insert this information into the article regarding Ahmedabad's pioneering Heat Action Plan:

Ahmedabad is the first city in India and South Asia to comprehensively address the health threats of extreme heat. The Ahmedabad Heat Action Plan is attempting to do so through an early warning system and heat preparedness plan. It also focuses on community participation, building public awareness of the risks of extreme heat, training medical and community workers to prevent and respond to heat-related illnesses, and coordinating an interagency emergency response effort when heat waves hit.

Hi,

I have a few suggestions for minor changes related to grammar, sentence formation and citations on this page. Since I have a new account, and this is a semi-protected article, I am unable to make any edits.

Follows a list of my suggestions. Please feel free to either add them yourself or give me feedback about them so that I can update them once my account is confirmed.

1. SUMMARY BOX (ON THE RIGHT EDGE) i)There seems to be some confusion in the literacy rates of Ahmedabad, the city vs Ahmedabad, the district. Since this is a page devoted to Ahmedabad as a city, and not a district, the summary box on the right panel needs to be updated with the right info for the city's demographics. CORRECTION- Literacy rate: 89.62% (and not 86.65% as mentioned in the box. Orphaned references in Ahmedabad

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Ahmedabad's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 11:12, 15 April 2017 (UTC)

Merge Jamalpur

It seems that Jamalpur, Gujarat is a district of the city which may not be independently notable, so I suggest a merge in. Klbrain (talk) 22:58, 13 July 2017 (UTC)

I have no problem with merge but look at Category:Neighbourhoods in Ahmedabad. Many of them are of same size and info, mostly without refs. What should we do about them?--Nizil (talk) 18:59, 15 July 2017 (UTC)

I think it should not be merged. Jamalpur is a notable neighbourhood which is often mentioned in the news. I have added some additional information to the article. A145029 (talk) 03:16, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

Restoring reverted edits

My recent edit to this page was reverted as it appeared to the editor to be WP:ADVOCACY of a particular point of view, specifically waste management in Indian cities or by Indian municipalities. I am relatively new to Wikipedia and see myself as a steward for water, sanitation and solid waste management related content on the site. These are the issues that I intend to write about in a neutral, balanced and informative manner. On reading my edits to the Ahmedabad page you will find that all of the content is verifiable i.e. it is sourced from reliable and published sources. My writing style, in my opinion, is (1) fact based, (2) neutral in tone without any puffery, contentious labels or unsupported attributions and (3) balanced i.e. holistic and not highlighting fringe views. I do not regard my edits as WP:ADVOCACY and would like to restore the content. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Swmwash (talkcontribs) 14:20, 21 April 2019 (UTC)

GA check

I am working my way through the Good articles listed at Places; having a quick look to see if they still meet the Good article criteria. I have reached this article. After I've had a quick look, I'll leave a note here. In general, initially I look to see if there are obvious issues: maintenance tags, unsourced sections, excessive media, etc, and if so, if this can be resolved quickly by myself. If it looks like there may be significant and/or several minor issues, I'll open a GAR to see the extent of the problems. If it looks like there are sufficient concerns to put the GA listing in jeopardy, and that significant work is needed to resolve the concerns, I will notify the main contributors to the article, and put the GAR on hold. SilkTork ✔Tea time 19:26, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Article has been tagged with sourcing concerns since Dec 2013, the lead does not adequately summarise the article, it is cluttered with inappropriate media and images. Opening GAR. SilkTork ✔Tea time 20:16, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

On hold

There is a decent article at heart here, but it needs tidying up. Looking through the "Article milestones" on the talkpage, the article as of August 2006, when it was promoted as a Featured Article, is a decent core; while it doesn't quite meet GA standards today, it does indicate that the article is essentially OK if tidied up. The reviews over the years indicate that the article has been prone to editors adding text, media and images without much thought to our editing guidelines and policies, and is indicative of casual editing by inexperienced editors on a popular article. While the edits have not been vandalistic (intentionally bad), the effect has been the same as if it were, as the article has suffered, and become unreliable and off-putting. Looking more closely at the edit history, I see TheRedPenOfDoom has done much to keep the page under control, though various unhelpful edits, such as this escape attention as they are sourced and not vandalistic. Given that the article needs a fair amount of TLC to bring it back up to scratch, I am putting the GAR onhold for the standard initial seven days (though of course will extend that as needed), and putting the article on semi-protection for the duration of the GAR and a bit longer, to give some stability. As standard, will let main contributors know what is happening. SilkTork ✔Tea time 14:26, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

I have added sources wherever necessary.--Skr15081997 (talk) 06:56, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
Well done for that. I'm going to have a closer look at the lead later to see what can be done there. At the moment I feel the article's GA listing is secure. SilkTork ✔Tea time 09:30, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
  • I still have some concerns about the lead, which needs further development, and the article could do with some further tightening and cleaning. However, the concerns are not enough to justify a delisting, so I'm closing this GAR as a keep. SilkTork ✔Tea time 21:37, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Is procession of Tajia during the Muslim holy month of Muharram intrinsic to the Culture of Ahmedabad ?

Just like Diwali, Holi, or Christmas, Muharram is celebrated pan India by Muslims. I think the Culture of Ahmedabad section should be unique to Ahmedabad only. Refer This.

Please let me know if you have any arguments. Would like to discuss it. SpunkyGeek (talk) 01:49, 2 April 2023 (UTC)

As you know, there is an article Demographics and culture of Ahmedabad. I can see the case for moving some of the stuff (where backed by citations that really support what is said) to the article on the culture of Ahmedabad.-- Toddy1 (talk) 10:20, 2 April 2023 (UTC)

In 2008, the municipalities of Chandkheda and Motera were also included in the jurisdiction of the corporation. At present, the total area of the mega city is 464.16 sq. kms. and its population according to 2001 census is 45,05,539. Does not mention the elevation, which is the fact it is cited for.
  7. worldpopulationreview.com.[11] Ahmedabad's 2023 population is now estimated at 8,650,605. ... 8. citypopulation.de.[12] Has census data for Ahmedabad urban agglomeration given below. It gives the area for the 2011 census as 471 sq km, and the elevation as 53 m.

2011 6,357,693 6,412,713
2023 - 8,650,605

So the two data for area in the infobox are (1) the area of the Municipal Corporation (the city) 505 sq km, and (2) Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority 1866 sq km. This needs to be made clearer.

  • Citations 1, 2 and 3 support the Municipal Corporation figure. Citations 4 and 5 are for two different old versions of the Municipal Corporation figure and should not be cited for it.
  • Citation 5 supports the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority. It is rather concerning that it has a figure of 449.5 sq km for the Municipal Corporation, which is out of date.
