[edit]Did the Persians lose their hunting penalty here or in a patch? Stilgar135 01:49, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
The Persians never had a hunting penalty, thay had a farming penalty and a hunting bonus. --TomasBat (@)(Sign) 18:45, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
- And yes, they lost the penalty.

Reception
[edit]I have played this game for years but the following stumps me: "The expansion did feature an option to play the original Age of Empires with or without the additional content. " I never came across any such option. I'm also surprised by the rest of the Reception section - some reviews actually state that the expansion was so studded with new stuff that it was almost a new game. Floris V 16:00, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
That's only if you use the original CD. Use the expansion cd for the updated one. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.16.23.49 (talk) 15:41, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

- I noticed. Where would we be without AoEH? Floris V 12:35, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, I am considering trying to get heavengames recgognised as a valid reference and citable source on this encyclopedia (generally fansites aren't recognised but there are official ways of getting them recognised as being reliable). A certain admin thought it wan't good enough listing it as a reference for Newtoy's (a spin off from ensemble studios- the makers of AoE series- after it was nuked by microsoft) new games.

Macedonians or Hellene civilization?
[edit]In game are present Hellens, not Macedonians as it is mentioned in the article —Preceding unsigned comment added by Stefke (talk • contribs) 21:58, 22 September 2007 (UTC)
- In my version it's Macedonians...although I heard about Hellens in a trial version? Dihydrogen Monoxide (H2O) 01:01, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
- It is Macedonians, I own a copy of the game and can give pictures as evidence if necessary.

- EDIT: I'm pretty sure it was Hellens in the beta or trial version of either the original or expansion pack. Hellens also are part of a mod for AoE3.

- I also had the time-trial. It had Helenistic League. Perhaps they renamed that to Macedonians in the release version. Rlinfinity (talk) 20:26, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

- Wikipedia is not a promotional service or an advertising service. There is a link to the official website of the game, and, where notable, specific programmers can be named in the text. We are writing an encyclopedia here. Thanks. --Dirk Beetstra T C 12:59, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

- I've added the manuals as citations and made the point that a scenario designer in the original game was the lead designer in the expansion. I think the engine info can go as it's not mentioned anywhere. VRXCES (talk) 00:36, 6 July 2024 (UTC)
- Are there no sources available for other staff? Also, should still mention and cite Windows in the article.
- Sadly not. Happy to omit it if it isn't worth it. I've added Windows as the platform the game was developed for in the headline.

Gameplay
- Tweaked a bit to clarify what it adds content to.
- I think a section + see also to AoEVG dedicated to explaining how AoE works would be valuable, as I think that without an explanation, these details may be more difficult to understand for those who don't know what kind of game AoE is. This should also clarify that it's a real-time strategy game. As an example of the issue, I feel that the population limit is not well explained, and would be hard to explain without describing the functions of units and supply.
- I've added a few words on the core gameplay, but I think I've tried to keep it brief too, just noting that there's combat units and resource gathering involved in the game.
- The sentence on the historical reenactments could be tweaked to flow a little better, maybe split into multiple sentences?
- Edited this down to simplify it.
- I think this is reasonable, I just thought it prudent to clarify what kind of game it was to uninformed readers.
- Edited this down to simplify it.
- "The Rise of Rome introduces four new campaigns to Age of Empires over nineteen scenarios" Should this be an and after The Rise of Rome?
- I'm not sure I understand this one, sorry.
Development and release
- "The expansion was conceived during a delay in the development of the game's sequel, Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings, which the studio identified needed more time beyond its planned release date of 1998" This reads a little confusing, it might be just on me though. I wasn't sure if it was a typo and it's meant to say "which the studio identified as being due to needing more time beyond..." or if it's "[Ensemble Studios] identified needing more time..." or something else.
- Reworded to simplify this.
Reception
- Is Shelly Shelley?
- Good pick up.
- I feel like Retrospective reception could use a little tweaking just to make things flow better. Nothing bad, just a suggestion.
- Made minor changes, but welcome any specific edits if a rewrite is needed.
Images
- Screenshot should specify exactly what it's doing in the article, ie why specifically it is used. For example, to visualize its depiction of Ancient Rome, to show the gameplay, to show the perspective, anything about the gameplay that might be discussed by critics that could be used to justify it.
- Good call - I've reworded to focus on the fact that the image depicts art from one of the new playable civs.
Spotcheck
- Checked sources 2 and 3. They seem to be saying what they're cited for, although I'm a little confused why 3 is cited for this: "The Rise of Rome introduces four new playable civilizations: Rome, Carthage, Palmyra, and Macedonia." Unless I'm misunderstanding, 2 seems to cite all that info.
- Good call - adjusted accordingly.
- Checked source 13, attached to "The expansion was conceived during a delay in the development of the game's sequel, Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings, which was originally planned for release in 1998." Seems accurate, though I wonder if it wouldn't be worthwhile to mention that part of the motivation to delay was informed by a desire to have more time to work on the sequel.
- So the source says! That's a fair correction. I've adjusted it.
- Checked the sources pertaining to this: "The Rise of Rome was a commercial success. Global sales estimates have varied between 800,000 and 1.2 million units by the early 2000s." All seem to check out.
- Checked the Kotaku Ash Parrish piece, checks out.
